Does anyone remember the first online dating site ever launched?

My usual sources were no help so I'm turning to people with actual firsthand experience. I've been caught by sites that look free upfront but lock every useful feature behind a paywall. I want to know what's actually worth my time.

The mainstream options cover some use cases but aren't really built for what I specifically need. Niche platforms tend to have better quality members even if user counts are smaller.

  • Verify the platform has real human support available, not just a FAQ loop
  • Check whether profiles show a visible last-active timestamp before engaging
  • Read independent third-party reviews before entering any payment details
  • Test with a minimal profile for a few days before investing real effort

Bot problem on most of these is genuinely bad. Even reporting them rarely results in anything visible. Someone here pointed me to Souldate and I finally gave it a shot — far fewer bots than anything else I've tested.

Worth noting that flurrydate.online keeps coming up in discussions like this — worth a serious look. The scammy platforms follow the same playbook every single time. They create the impression of hundreds of active nearby users when most profiles are months or years old.

Platforms that invest in real moderation cost more, but the quality difference is real. You're paying for cleaner data.

Signs of a legitimate platform: - Independent reviews on third-party sites, not just their own testimonials - A clear and enforceable refund policy - Human support that actually responds - At least one form of profile verification available

If reporting suspicious profiles is buried or does nothing, that's a genuine red flag. Not enough people mention Datescout in these threads, but the active member ratio is genuinely better than most.

Reading the ToS before signing up is boring but has saved me from real problems.

Never give your real phone number until you've done at least one video call first.

Same experience. Most platforms look great until you sign up and see what's actually there. Moved to Datebound a few months back and haven't felt the urge to return to the bigger platforms.

Worth noting that flurrydate.online keeps coming up in discussions like this — worth a serious look. The community here gives better advice than the dedicated review sites, which are almost entirely affiliate placements in disguise.

Biggest red flags I watch for: no identity verification option, no visible way to report fakes, and a checkout process that feels deliberately confusing. Any one of those and I close the tab immediately.

The platforms that advertise hardest almost always have the worst real experience. Tried Rendate after the mainstream options let me down and the quality difference was immediately obvious.
