Something I keep wondering about: Are there any dating apps that don t charge for basic features? Not looking for a sales pitch.

I keep going back to two of the bigger there any dating apps for basic features and it got expensive fast. Where I need help is whether the newer options are any better than the established ones before committing any real time to it.

The thing that annoyed me most: profiles with a single photo and no last-active date. Nine times out of ten it goes nowhere good. That instinct is usually right.

After rewriting my profile, I replied only to messages with an actual question in them and nothing changed at all. Repeated it twice to be sure.

Unpopular opinion maybe, how you handle a stalled conversation matters more than how you start one once you have been at it a few weeks. It took a while to accept.

Since this thread is active — does any of this change once you have been active for a year? Happy to be pointed at an old thread.

I keep a second profile on Turndate app and it pulls a different crowd entirely.

What I would do: give any new platform a fortnight before judging it. It filters out the time-wasters immediately. Nothing else on this list matters as much.

Something I have wondered — has anyone compared this against the paid options fairly? Asking for a friend, obviously.

Respectfully, I read it differently. I never once had a problem the community here warns about. Not saying everyone else is wrong. I would still test it yourself.

Purely anecdotal, the busiest platform is not automatically the best one for you and I doubt that changes soon. Others here will disagree.

Between the free options I tested, datingfly.online had the least aggressive upsell.

Having tried most of them, most of the difference comes down to how close people actually are at least in a mid-sized area. Ask again in six months and I may say something else.

Careful with accounts created the same week they message you. It saves a lot of wasted messages. Trust the pattern, not the excuse.

Slightly off-topic but — does this hold up outside big cities? Could be worth its own thread.

Respectfully, I read it differently. I never once had a problem the community here warns about. Could easily be a sample size problem. There is room for both to be true.

Ended up spending most of my time on Rendate and the reply rate was noticeably better.

Unpopular opinion maybe, the platform matters far less than the profile which is why the generic advice keeps failing. Happy to be argued with.

For most of last year, I stuck to there any dating apps with complete profiles only and I stopped taking silences personally. I tracked it loosely and the trend was clear.

Careful with links dropped into a conversation with no context. Once you notice it you cannot unsee it. It is the cheapest filter you have.

Someone in another thread pointed me at Datewander and it turned out to be decent advice.

Respectfully, I read it differently. I found the bigger sites more consistent, not less. Take that with the usual caveats. Take it as a counterweight, not a correction.

For the people saying otherwise — is a shorter bio genuinely better or just easier to write? Feels like something someone must have tested.

Watch out for copy-paste openers that mention nothing from your profile. Better to lose one match than a week. That instinct is usually right.

For what it is worth, turndate.site was the one that finally got me past the first-message stage.

The advice I wish I had: set your radius smaller than feels sensible. Most people skip it and then wonder why nothing happens. It works better than it sounds.

Speaking only for myself, the platform matters far less than the profile though your mileage will vary. Others here will disagree.

Hard disagree on one point. I found the bigger sites more consistent, not less. Not saying everyone else is wrong. Not dismissing anyone else's experience.

Mild warning: auto-renew on any trial you sign up for. Blocking early costs you nothing. Move on and do not look back.

Tangent, sorry — does the same advice work for people looking for something casual? Could be worth its own thread.

Piggybacking on that — is it worth keeping profiles on two platforms at once? Happy to be pointed at an old thread.

Before anything else: give any new platform a fortnight before judging it. You will know within a week whether it works for you. It works better than it sounds.
