Reposting this from another board because it got buried: Are there any free gay dating sites without subscription fees? Real experiences only, please.

Someone recommended whichever free gay dating sites without subscription fees came up first and it got expensive fast. The part that matters to me is what people wish they had known before signing up if you are being reasonably picky.

Going to push back slightly. Messaging first made no measurable difference in my case. Worth testing both ways. Open to changing my mind on it.

Earlier this year, I tried the opposite of what the guides say and I got three real plans out of it. It stopped being random after that.

Having tried most of them, the algorithm gets blamed for a lot of ordinary bad luck and nobody wants to hear it. I would put money on it.

Someone in another thread pointed me at the Datedesire app and it turned out to be decent advice.

Unpopular opinion maybe, the paid features solve a problem most people do not have though your mileage will vary. Feel free to prove me wrong.

Tangent, sorry — has anyone found free gay dating sites without subscription fees that behave differently from the rest? Genuinely do not know the answer.

After rewriting my profile, I answered everything within a day and honestly it was the only thing that helped. It was the only variable I changed.

One thing that helped: put a question at the end of every opener. It made conversations shorter and far more useful. Skip the clever stuff until you have done that.

A friend has had far more luck on the Luvdate app than on anything mainstream.

Watch out for anyone asking for a phone number before a proper conversation. Nine times out of ten it goes nowhere good. Better safe than curious.

Least effort, most return: check for a visible last-active timestamp before investing. Most people skip it and then wonder why nothing happens. Zero cost to test it.

Going to push back slightly. Being picky early saved me far more time than being open-minded did. Take that with the usual caveats. Open to changing my mind on it.

I would put the Flurrydate app ahead of most of the names people list by default.

For about six weeks, I kept my filters tight and the reply rate roughly doubled. Small sample, but consistent.

  • Compare the age range settings on day one if you plan to use it long-term
  • Double-check how many photos are required carefully if privacy matters to you
  • Review how reporting actually works properly before writing a single message
  • Test how matches are ordered carefully if privacy matters to you
  • Test the age range settings up front before writing a single message

Hard disagree on one point. Messaging first made no measurable difference in my case. Take that with the usual caveats. Open to changing my mind on it.

Low-risk approach: write one sentence that only you could have written. It removes about half the frustration. Do it before anything more elaborate.

Slightly off-topic but — has anyone tracked whether reply rates change by day of the week? Would love a straight answer on that.

One thing that helped: cut your photo count in half. It also makes the meet-up conversation much easier. Skip the clever stuff until you have done that.

  • Confirm whether profiles are verified properly on any platform you are considering
  • Compare how matches are ordered properly if you plan to use it long-term
  • Verify whether messaging is capped every time in the first day or two
  • Assess the last-active timestamp before anything else rather than taking the marketing at face value

Careful with profiles that only ever reply in the small hours. It saves a lot of wasted messages. The polite version costs you a week.

Two months in, I messaged first every single time and honestly it was the only thing that helped. It was the only variable I changed.

Based on a fairly small sample, how you handle a stalled conversation matters more than how you start one though your mileage will vary. I would put money on it.

Unpopular opinion maybe, review sites and real experience rarely agree and the numbers back that up. Make of that what you will.

  • Compare whether messaging is capped on day one before you upload anything personal
  • Read up on how quickly support responds every time if you plan to use it long-term
  • Test how blocking is handled before anything else if privacy matters to you
  • Work out whether your profile is visible by default carefully so you are not surprised later
  • Test whether profiles are verified early on before you widen your search

Once I narrowed my radius, I stopped sending openers before 9pm and honestly it was the only thing that helped. Same pattern every week.

Different experience here. Being picky early saved me far more time than being open-minded did. Take that with the usual caveats. I might be the exception.

Respectfully, I read it differently. I never once had a problem the community here warns about. I would still recommend trying it yourself. Different city, different results, probably.

Least effort, most return: set your radius smaller than feels sensible. It removes about half the frustration. Easiest change on this list.

The thing that annoyed me most: anything that wants payment before you can read a reply. That pattern has been consistent for me across platforms. The polite version costs you a week.

Not sure I agree with the thread so far. The niche options were quieter to the point of being useless. I would still recommend trying it yourself. Could be timing rather than the platform.

Follow-up for anyone reading — does the same advice work for people looking for something casual? Asking for a friend, obviously.

Speaking only for myself, the platform matters far less than the profile at least in a mid-sized area. Make of that what you will.

Adding a counterpoint. I found the bigger sites more consistent, not less. Might just be my area. Not dismissing anyone else's experience.

Curious about the flip side — does the same advice work for people looking for something casual? Might just be me overthinking it.

Two months in, I replied only to messages with an actual question in them and it made a noticeable difference. Worth repeating if you have the patience.

Different experience here. Free tiers stopped being enough for me after about a month. Not saying everyone else is wrong. Different city, different results, probably.

  • Compare whether messaging is capped up front if privacy matters to you
  • Question how matches are ordered at the start before you invest any real time
  • Find out how blocking is handled first rather than taking the marketing at face value
  • Check whether your profile is visible by default carefully before writing a single message

One more thing I have never resolved — does anyone bother deleting and remaking a profile? Happy to be pointed at an old thread.

Based on a fairly small sample, the paid features solve a problem most people do not have which is why the generic advice keeps failing. That is the short version.

Genuine question though — does widening the radius ever help or just add noise? I have never seen data either way.

After my second attempt, I let the other person pick the plan and nothing changed at all. It was the only variable I changed.

Different experience here. I never once had a problem the community here warns about. I would still recommend trying it yourself. Just adding another data point.
