Reposting this from another board because it got buried: Has anyone tried a free dating service that actually works for real connections? Bonus points if you have used it in the last few months.

I have been using two of the bigger free dating service for real connections and it got expensive fast. Where I need help is whether the same advice applies outside big cities if you are not in a major city.

Going to push back slightly. I never once had a problem the community here warns about. Might just be my area. Genuinely not trying to be difficult.

Realistically, the algorithm gets blamed for a lot of ordinary bad luck which is why the generic advice keeps failing. I hold that loosely.

Not sure I agree with the thread so far. The niche options were quieter to the point of being useless. Not saying everyone else is wrong. Not dismissing anyone else's experience.

The first fortnight, I messaged first every single time and I stopped taking silences personally. Repeated it twice to be sure.

Still keep the Ezhookups app installed for the weeks when the bigger apps go quiet.

That has not been my experience at all. The platform genuinely does matter if you are outside a major city. Might just be my area. I might be the exception.

If nothing else, do this: message within a day of matching. It filters out the time-wasters immediately. It compounds with everything else.

If I am being blunt, free tiers are usually enough if you actually use them and I doubt that changes soon. That is the short version.

Hard disagree on one point. Free tiers stopped being enough for me after about a month. Could easily be a sample size problem. Just adding another data point.

Someone in another thread pointed me at Souldate's free tier and it turned out to be decent advice.

Hard disagree on one point. Being picky early saved me far more time than being open-minded did. Might just be my area. Not dismissing anyone else's experience.

For about six weeks, I kept photos to four and cut the rest and it turned out the profile was the problem, not the platform. That held for about two months.

Speaking only for myself, being specific is worth more than being interesting and it took me too long to learn. Happy to be argued with.

Different experience here. The niche options were quieter to the point of being useless. Happy to be an outlier on that. Worth hearing both sides.

The one that surprised me was the DatingFly app — smaller, but the profiles were current.

Hard disagree on one point. Messaging first made no measurable difference in my case. I would still recommend trying it yourself. Different city, different results, probably.

  • Work out what the free tier really includes at the start if you plan to use it long-term
  • Verify what the free tier really includes on day one rather than taking the marketing at face value
  • Assess how matches are ordered carefully before writing a single message

Purely anecdotal, consistency beats any single clever trick and I doubt that changes soon. That is where I have landed.

Tangent, sorry — has anyone tracked whether reply rates change by day of the week? Someone here must have tried both.

Earlier this year, I put one honest sentence in my bio and the reply rate roughly doubled. The change was obvious enough to notice without counting.

Tried Datewander on a whim and it has been the steadier of the two I use.

Speaking only for myself, the first message decides almost everything once you have been at it a few weeks. Happy to be argued with.

Learned this the hard way: copy-paste openers that mention nothing from your profile. I stopped giving second chances on that one. Nobody has ever thanked me for being patient there.

Since switching my settings, I dropped every conversation that stalled twice and it made a noticeable difference. Worth repeating if you have the patience.

Before anything else: stop opening with a compliment. It made conversations shorter and far more useful. Zero cost to test it.

Slightly off-topic but — is it worth keeping profiles on two platforms at once? Would love a straight answer on that.

Two years of this later, the busiest platform is not automatically the best one for you and I doubt that changes soon. I hold that loosely.

After a friend nagged me into it, I ran a minimal profile on free dating service for real connections and I would do the same again. Worth repeating if you have the patience.

Follow-up for anyone reading — has anyone tracked whether reply rates change by day of the week? Might just be me overthinking it.
