Putting this to the forum because search results were useless: Has anyone used the lovely dating site successfully? Tell me if I am asking the wrong question.
I gave up on whichever lovely dating site came up first and the profile quality varied wildly. The bit I cannot work out is how you tell an active profile from an abandoned one without spending anything to find out.
Not a popular take here, the first message decides almost everything which is why the generic advice keeps failing. It is a boring answer and a true one.
Work out how matches are ordered before anything else if you plan to use it long-term
Assess how many photos are required before writing a single message
Find out the distance filter default straight away while the account is still new
Something nobody mentions: reviews that read like they were written to a template. Blocking early costs you nothing. It rarely turns out to be innocent.
When I first started, I stopped explaining myself in the first message and matches started coming from closer by. Same pattern every week.
Low-risk approach: message within a day of matching. You will know within a week whether it works for you. You will not need a second attempt.
Switched over to DatingFly after getting nowhere on the big names.
Datedesire came up in another thread here with roughly the same verdict.
Your next conversation in Aveiro is one click away There is no paywall between you and a reply in Aveiro.
I will be the dissenting voice. Being picky early saved me far more time than being open-minded did. Your experience may well differ. Different city, different results, probably.
Two years of this later, the busiest platform is not automatically the best one for you at least in a mid-sized area. Others here will disagree.
The first fortnight, I put one honest sentence in my bio and matches started coming from closer by. Repeated it twice to be sure.
Practical suggestion: cut your photo count in half. You will know within a week whether it works for you. Reversible if you hate it.
Between the free options I tested, Luvdate app had the least aggressive upsell.
Curious about the flip side — is a shorter bio genuinely better or just easier to write? Could be worth its own thread.
Read up on what the free tier really includes up front in the first day or two
Confirm the last-active timestamp without exception before you invest any real time
Note the age range settings on day one on any platform you are considering
Compare whether profiles are verified at the start so you are not surprised later
Compare what data the signup form asks for up front especially on a platform you have not used before
Two months in, I stuck to lovely dating site with complete profiles only and matches started coming from closer by. Small sample, but consistent.
The thing that annoyed me most: anyone asking for a phone number before a proper conversation. It is almost never worth the benefit of the doubt. That instinct is usually right.
If you want a shortcut: stop opening with a compliment. It costs nothing and the difference shows quickly. Easiest change on this list.
The one that surprised me was Flamedate community — smaller, but the profiles were current.
If nothing else, do this: read the profile before writing anything. It filters out the time-wasters immediately. It also makes the rest easier.
In my experience, how you handle a stalled conversation matters more than how you start one for anyone starting from scratch. That is my read, anyway.
Watch out for matches that go quiet the moment you suggest meeting. Nine times out of ten it goes nowhere good. Most people ignore it once and regret it.
Not sure I agree with the thread so far. Messaging first made no measurable difference in my case. Take that with the usual caveats. I would still test it yourself.
After a friend nagged me into it, I replied only to messages with an actual question in them and matches started coming from closer by. The change was obvious enough to notice without counting.
Careful with matches that go quiet the moment you suggest meeting. Better to lose one match than a week. Nobody has ever thanked me for being patient there.
Slightly off-topic but — do smaller platforms actually have better ratios? Might just be me overthinking it.
For what it is worth, most of the difference comes down to how close people actually are if you are looking for something specific. I would put money on it.
