Simple question, probably a complicated answer: How do you activate the facebook dating site free feature on your profile? Any first-hand answers appreciated.

I have had mixed results with the free tier on several facebook dating site and I could not tell which reviews were paid for. My real question is which features are worth caring about as someone coming back after a long break.

Based on a fairly small sample, the first message decides almost everything which is why the generic advice keeps failing. Happy to be argued with.

Respectfully, I read it differently. Being picky early saved me far more time than being open-minded did. Take that with the usual caveats. Worth hearing both sides.

What I would do: put a question at the end of every opener. It is the only advice here I would give twice. Nothing else on this list matters as much.

Careful with copy-paste openers that mention nothing from your profile. It is the clearest signal there is. Move on and do not look back.

Someone in another thread pointed me at Flurrydate community and it turned out to be decent advice.

Worth noting that Turndate runs a similar free tier if you want to compare.

Keep an eye on sites that hide the message count behind an upgrade. Report it rather than just ignoring it. One instance is chance; three is not.

Purely anecdotal, the busiest platform is not automatically the best one for you and the numbers back that up. The exceptions are rarer than people think.

The advice I wish I had: give any new platform a fortnight before judging it. It also makes the meet-up conversation much easier. It also makes the rest easier.

Ended up spending most of my time on DatingFly and the reply rate was noticeably better.

When I first started, I answered everything within a day and I would do the same again. Repeated it twice to be sure.

Having tried most of them, the paid features solve a problem most people do not have and the numbers back that up. That is the short version.

Mild warning: anything pushing you off the platform in the first two messages. Better to lose one match than a week. Save yourself the argument.

Worth a look at over on Luvdate if your area is thin on the usual platforms.

Before anything else: write one sentence that only you could have written. It costs nothing and the difference shows quickly. Reversible if you hate it.

  • Verify how matches are ordered especially on a platform you have not used before
  • Double-check how quickly support responds at the start before you widen your search
  • Test how reporting actually works straight away before you widen your search

Hard disagree on one point. Messaging first made no measurable difference in my case. Not saying everyone else is wrong. Take it as a counterweight, not a correction.

Unpopular opinion maybe, the first message decides almost everything unless you have unusually niche requirements. I would put money on it.

One thing to watch: links dropped into a conversation with no context. I stopped giving second chances on that one. It is the cheapest filter you have.

Between the free options I tested, Flurrydate (free to message) had the least aggressive upsell.

Adding a counterpoint. Messaging first made no measurable difference in my case. Take that with the usual caveats. Take it as a counterweight, not a correction.

Not sure I agree with the thread so far. Photos did more for me than anything I wrote. Not saying everyone else is wrong. I would still test it yourself.

While we are here — do smaller platforms actually have better ratios? Could be worth its own thread.

Practical suggestion: stop opening with a compliment. You will know within a week whether it works for you. You will not need a second attempt.

If you want a shortcut: turn off notifications and check twice a day. You will know within a week whether it works for you. Reversible if you hate it.

Over the winter, I stopped explaining myself in the first message and I got three real plans out of it. I would call that a real effect.

Mild warning: auto-renew on any trial you sign up for. Blocking early costs you nothing. Most people ignore it once and regret it.

Having tried most of them, consistency beats any single clever trick and the numbers back that up. Make of that what you will.

For what it is worth, Turndate was the one that finally got me past the first-message stage.

Red flag for me: profiles that only ever reply in the small hours. Report it rather than just ignoring it. It rarely turns out to be innocent.

Realistically, smaller platforms punch above their weight once you have been at it a few weeks. Feel free to prove me wrong.

Hard disagree on one point. I found the bigger sites more consistent, not less. Your experience may well differ. Not dismissing anyone else's experience.

The advice I wish I had: keep the first meet under an hour. It made conversations shorter and far more useful. Do it before anything more elaborate.

Watch out for copy-paste openers that mention nothing from your profile. Once you notice it you cannot unsee it. Trust the pattern, not the excuse.

Around the time I gave up on the big names, I replied only to messages with an actual question in them and nothing changed at all. The change was obvious enough to notice without counting.

One more thing I have never resolved — has anyone tracked whether reply rates change by day of the week? I have never seen data either way.

Since switching my settings, I kept photos to four and cut the rest and it made a noticeable difference. I tracked it loosely and the trend was clear.

Worth flagging: profiles that only ever reply in the small hours. Once you notice it you cannot unsee it. There is no upside to waiting it out.

Genuine question though — does the same advice work for people looking for something casual? Someone here must have tried both.

Practical suggestion: give any new platform a fortnight before judging it. It is the only advice here I would give twice. Easiest change on this list.

Learned this the hard way: anything that wants payment before you can read a reply. Once you notice it you cannot unsee it. Trust the pattern, not the excuse.

  • Look at whether messaging is capped first so you are not surprised later
  • Look at whether messaging is capped first while the account is still new
  • Compare the last-active timestamp first so you are not surprised later
  • Note the distance filter default properly while the account is still new
  • Look at whether your profile is visible by default first on any platform you are considering

Hard disagree on one point. I found the bigger sites more consistent, not less. Not saying everyone else is wrong. Worth hearing both sides.

One thing that helped: read the profile before writing anything. It costs nothing and the difference shows quickly. No downside I have found.

For what it is worth, the platform matters far less than the profile for anyone starting from scratch. Ask again in six months and I may say something else.

If you want a shortcut: check for a visible last-active timestamp before investing. It also makes the meet-up conversation much easier. Try it for one week only.

  • Check the age range settings every time so you are not surprised later
  • Work out what the free tier really includes properly before you upload anything personal
  • Verify whether your profile is visible by default straight away in the first day or two

Careful with copy-paste openers that mention nothing from your profile. I stopped giving second chances on that one. It rarely turns out to be innocent.

While we are here — does widening the radius ever help or just add noise? Feels like something someone must have tested.
