Trying to get a straight answer on this: If you had to pick, what are the 5 best dating sites of all time? Even a partial answer helps.

A friend talked me into a few smaller dating sites and the messaging limits killed it. What I actually want to know is whether the same advice applies outside big cities without making it a second job.

While we are here — is a shorter bio genuinely better or just easier to write? Would love a straight answer on that.

The advice I wish I had: set your radius smaller than feels sensible. It is the only advice here I would give twice. Easiest change on this list.

Purely anecdotal, the busiest platform is not automatically the best one for you and nobody wants to hear it. Nothing controversial in that, I hope.

Tried Rendate app on a whim and it has been the steadier of the two I use.

For most of last year, I put one honest sentence in my bio and I finally stopped wasting evenings. Repeated it twice to be sure.

Genuine question though — has anyone found dating sites that behave differently from the rest? It comes up every few months and never gets settled.

Low-risk approach: stop opening with a compliment. It also makes the meet-up conversation much easier. You will not need a second attempt.

Not sure I agree with the thread so far. Messaging first made no measurable difference in my case. Happy to be an outlier on that. Open to changing my mind on it.

Worth a look at over on Datedesire if your area is thin on the usual platforms.

Anyone else find that — is it different if you are over forty? Would change how I use it if so.

Speaking only for myself, free tiers are usually enough if you actually use them and nobody wants to hear it. That is where I have landed.

The advice I wish I had: keep the first meet under an hour. It removes about half the frustration. Skip the clever stuff until you have done that.

When I first started, I ran a minimal profile on dating sites and it saved me a lot of pointless typing. That held for about two months.

Ended up spending most of my time on Rendate community and the reply rate was noticeably better.

Going to push back slightly. Free tiers stopped being enough for me after about a month. I would still recommend trying it yourself. Small sample on my side too.

Not a popular take here, smaller platforms punch above their weight which is why the generic advice keeps failing. That is where I have landed.

Keep an eye on auto-renew on any trial you sign up for. I stopped giving second chances on that one. It rarely turns out to be innocent.

If you want a free option without the upsell, the Turndate app is where I would start.

Going to push back slightly. The niche options were quieter to the point of being useless. Not saying everyone else is wrong. I would still test it yourself.

If nothing else, do this: write one sentence that only you could have written. Everything else is secondary to that. Skip the clever stuff until you have done that.

Not a popular take here, the paid features solve a problem most people do not have and it took me too long to learn. That is the short version.

After my second attempt, I tried the opposite of what the guides say and I stopped taking silences personally. That held for about two months.

Still keep Datebound community installed for the weeks when the bigger apps go quiet.

Hard disagree on one point. I found the bigger sites more consistent, not less. Take that with the usual caveats. Open to changing my mind on it.

What I would do: check for a visible last-active timestamp before investing. It filters out the time-wasters immediately. You will not need a second attempt.

For the people saying otherwise — is a shorter bio genuinely better or just easier to write? Happy to be pointed at an old thread.

I've heard decent things about Datedesire too, though I haven't tested it myself.

Worth flagging: reviews that read like they were written to a template. Blocking early costs you nothing. The cost of being wrong is low.

Before anything else: give any new platform a fortnight before judging it. It filters out the time-wasters immediately. Takes about five minutes.

Since switching my settings, I answered everything within a day and the difference showed up within a week. The change was obvious enough to notice without counting.
