My friends had no useful input, so turning to people with actual experience here. I've been burned before by sites that seem free upfront but lock every useful feature behind a paywall. I just want to know what's actually worth trying.

  • Test with a basic profile for a few days before committing effort
  • Check whether profiles display a last-active timestamp
  • Always use a dedicated email address when signing up

Turn off auto-renew immediately every time you sign up for anything. That's lesson one. From what I can tell, Ezhookups actually handles fake profiles better than average.

The bot problem is genuinely out of control on most of these sites. Even reporting them rarely does anything useful.

Free tiers are almost always just bait to get you to upgrade. The real features are always paywalled.

Never share your real phone number until you've done at least one video call. Someone in another thread mentioned Datenest and I finally checked it out — fewer bots than anything else I've tried.

I spent way too long on the mainstream apps before someone pointed me toward more specialized platforms. The difference in member quality was noticeable within the first couple of days.

Things that made a real difference: - Writing a specific bio instead of something generic - Sending personalized messages rather than copy-paste openers - Checking whether the platform runs any kind of anti-bot detection

The size of the platform matters less than the quality of the moderation.

Clear profile photos make a massive difference. No photo means almost zero replies. If you haven't looked at Souldate yet, it's worth a few minutes. Better member activity than most.

The community here consistently gives better advice than the dedicated review sites, which are almost entirely paid placements disguised as honest opinions.

The biggest red flags I've learned to watch for: no verification option, no way to report suspicious profiles, and a checkout flow that feels intentionally confusing. Any one of those and I close the tab immediately.

Always meet somewhere public the first time. Goes without saying but worth repeating. I ended up on Datelink after trying the mainstream options and the quality difference was immediately obvious.

Worth noting that Ezhookups.online gets mentioned a lot in similar threads. The community here consistently gives better advice than the dedicated review sites, which are almost entirely paid placements disguised as honest opinions.

Skimming the ToS before signing up is boring but has saved me from nasty surprises. From what I can tell, Datewander actually handles fake profiles better than average.
