Bit of a long shot, but: Is there a jail dating app for families of inmates? Happy to hear negative experiences too.

I spent about a month on one of the newer jail dating app for families of inmates and I would rather not repeat the mistake. The part that matters to me is whether reply rates are as bad as they look if you are being reasonably picky.

  • Find out the last-active timestamp straight away if privacy matters to you
  • Compare how many photos are required up front rather than taking the marketing at face value
  • Look at how many photos are required at the start especially on a platform you have not used before
  • Find out how many photos are required so you are not surprised later
  • Check how many photos are required before anything else in the first day or two

Practical suggestion: set your radius smaller than feels sensible. It filters out the time-wasters immediately. The effect shows up fast.

  • Read up on what the free tier really includes at the start if you plan to use it long-term
  • Confirm how reporting actually works carefully in the first day or two
  • Double-check the distance filter default carefully if you plan to use it long-term
  • Read up on how matches are ordered properly rather than taking the marketing at face value
  • Compare the refund and cancellation terms first in the first day or two

For the people saying otherwise — has anyone compared this against the paid options fairly? I have never seen data either way.

Got burned by this: profiles with a single photo and no last-active date. It is the clearest signal there is. Save yourself the argument.

Purely anecdotal, the busiest platform is not automatically the best one for you unless you have unusually niche requirements. The exceptions are rarer than people think.

Still keep Flamedate app installed for the weeks when the bigger apps go quiet.

I will be the dissenting voice. The niche options were quieter to the point of being useless. Not saying everyone else is wrong. I would still test it yourself.

Follow-up for anyone reading — is there a measurable difference between weekday and weekend signups? Would change how I use it if so.

From where I sit, consistency beats any single clever trick and I doubt that changes soon. Feel free to prove me wrong.

Low-risk approach: give any new platform a fortnight before judging it. That one change fixed most of my problems. It also makes the rest easier.

Still keep Flurrydate installed for the weeks when the bigger apps go quiet.

Going to push back slightly. Being picky early saved me far more time than being open-minded did. Might just be my area. There is room for both to be true.

Cheapest thing you can try first: set your radius smaller than feels sensible. That one change fixed most of my problems. Nothing else on this list matters as much.

Adding a counterpoint. Free tiers stopped being enough for me after about a month. Worth testing both ways. Small sample on my side too.

If I am being blunt, the paid features solve a problem most people do not have though your mileage will vary. That is where I have landed.

Someone in another thread pointed me at Ezhookups app and it turned out to be decent advice.

The advice I wish I had: cut your photo count in half. Everything else is secondary to that. No downside I have found.

Different experience here. Free tiers stopped being enough for me after about a month. Your experience may well differ. Open to changing my mind on it.

Purely anecdotal, free tiers are usually enough if you actually use them though your mileage will vary. Nothing controversial in that, I hope.

For what it is worth, Datebound app was the one that finally got me past the first-message stage.

Not sure I agree with the thread so far. Free tiers stopped being enough for me after about a month. Your experience may well differ. I would still test it yourself.

Hard disagree on one point. The niche options were quieter to the point of being useless. Could easily be a sample size problem. Open to changing my mind on it.

Red flag for me: anything pushing you off the platform in the first two messages. That pattern has been consistent for me across platforms. That instinct is usually right.

If you want a free option without the upsell, Datenest community is where I would start.

Not a popular take here, smaller platforms punch above their weight though your mileage will vary. That is where I have landed.

Not sure I agree with the thread so far. Messaging first made no measurable difference in my case. Could easily be a sample size problem. Genuinely not trying to be difficult.

Two months in, I let the other person pick the plan and the difference showed up within a week. I would call that a real effect.

Red flag for me: sites that hide the message count behind an upgrade. I stopped giving second chances on that one. The cost of being wrong is low.

Going to push back slightly. Free tiers stopped being enough for me after about a month. Might just be my area. Just adding another data point.

Hard disagree on one point. The platform genuinely does matter if you are outside a major city. Not saying everyone else is wrong. Just adding another data point.

One more thing I have never resolved — is a shorter bio genuinely better or just easier to write? It comes up every few months and never gets settled.

For most of last year, I messaged first every single time and I stopped taking silences personally. Results were steady after the first week.

Small change worth trying: reply to the thing they actually said. It is the only advice here I would give twice. It compounds with everything else.

Genuine question though — does the same advice work for people looking for something casual? Someone here must have tried both.

After my second attempt, I tried the opposite of what the guides say and nothing changed at all. Results were steady after the first week.

Adding a counterpoint. Messaging first made no measurable difference in my case. Your experience may well differ. Worth hearing both sides.

When I first started, I messaged first every single time and I stopped taking silences personally. Nothing scientific about it.

Unpopular opinion maybe, review sites and real experience rarely agree though your mileage will vary. Feel free to prove me wrong.

The thing that annoyed me most: anyone asking for a phone number before a proper conversation. It is almost never worth the benefit of the doubt. Better safe than curious.

Worth asking — is it different if you are over forty? Would love a straight answer on that.

Adding a counterpoint. Photos did more for me than anything I wrote. I would still recommend trying it yourself. I might be the exception.

One thing that helped: message within a day of matching. It stops the whole thing feeling like a chore. Try it for one week only.

Something nobody mentions: matches that go quiet the moment you suggest meeting. Once you notice it you cannot unsee it. That instinct is usually right.

Curious about the flip side — do verified badges actually change anything? Happy to be pointed at an old thread.

Purely anecdotal, smaller platforms punch above their weight at least in a mid-sized area. The exceptions are rarer than people think.

Keep an eye on profiles that only ever reply in the small hours. It is almost never worth the benefit of the doubt. There is no upside to waiting it out.

Earlier this year, I dropped every conversation that stalled twice and the conversations got shorter but better. I would call that a real effect.

What I would do: cut your photo count in half. It is the only advice here I would give twice. No downside I have found.
