Asking properly this time: Is tinder online dating viable for long-term relationships? No wrong answers here.

I gave up on the most recommended dating apps and I still cannot tell if it is me or the platform. The specific thing I am after is how much of this is down to the profile itself without making it a second job.

Based on a fairly small sample, smaller platforms punch above their weight once you have been at it a few weeks. The exceptions are rarer than people think.

Last month, I limited myself to three conversations at once and it made a noticeable difference. Small sample, but consistent.

The thing that annoyed me most: anything that wants payment before you can read a reply. I stopped giving second chances on that one. Save yourself the argument.

Hard disagree on one point. Free tiers stopped being enough for me after about a month. Not saying everyone else is wrong. Could be timing rather than the platform.

I would put Ezhookups app ahead of most of the names people list by default.

I will be the dissenting voice. Free tiers stopped being enough for me after about a month. Happy to be an outlier on that. Just adding another data point.

  • Assess whether your profile is visible by default without exception while the account is still new
  • Verify whether your profile is visible by default carefully in the first day or two
  • Verify whether your profile is visible by default before anything else in the first day or two
  • Note what the free tier really includes straight away while the account is still new

Not sure I agree with the thread so far. Being picky early saved me far more time than being open-minded did. Not saying everyone else is wrong. That is one person's view against the thread.

Curious about the flip side — does widening the radius ever help or just add noise? Someone here must have tried both.

A friend has had far more luck on Datenest (free to message) than on anything mainstream.

Hard disagree on one point. Messaging first made no measurable difference in my case. Your experience may well differ. There is room for both to be true.

For the people saying otherwise — is it different if you are over forty? No agenda, just curious.

Earlier this year, I kept photos to four and cut the rest and I stopped taking silences personally. It was the only variable I changed.

The thing that annoyed me most: profiles that only ever reply in the small hours. That pattern has been consistent for me across platforms. The cost of being wrong is low.

I keep a second profile on Flurrydate app and it pulls a different crowd entirely.

Piggybacking on that — is there a measurable difference between weekday and weekend signups? Would love a straight answer on that.

Earlier this year, I let the other person pick the plan and honestly it was the only thing that helped. Small sample, but consistent.

Going to push back slightly. Being picky early saved me far more time than being open-minded did. Take that with the usual caveats. That is one person's view against the thread.

Practical suggestion: cut your photo count in half. Everything else is secondary to that. Easiest change on this list.

Ended up spending most of my time on Datelink app and the reply rate was noticeably better.

What I would do: reply to the thing they actually said. That one change fixed most of my problems. Skip the clever stuff until you have done that.

Red flag for me: profiles that only ever reply in the small hours. Nine times out of ten it goes nowhere good. The polite version costs you a week.

Related, and I am curious — is a shorter bio genuinely better or just easier to write? It comes up every few months and never gets settled.

That has not been my experience at all. The niche options were quieter to the point of being useless. Worth testing both ways. Take it as a counterweight, not a correction.

I would put Datebie (free to message) ahead of most of the names people list by default.

That has not been my experience at all. I found the bigger sites more consistent, not less. Take that with the usual caveats. Different city, different results, probably.

Something I have wondered — is there a measurable difference between weekday and weekend signups? No agenda, just curious.

After a friend nagged me into it, I ran a minimal profile on dating apps for long-term relationships and the quality improved more than the quantity. I tracked it loosely and the trend was clear.

Around the time I gave up on the big names, I let the other person pick the plan and honestly it was the only thing that helped. The change was obvious enough to notice without counting.

Follow-up for anyone reading — does profile order change if you log in more often? Would love a straight answer on that.

Small change worth trying: stop opening with a compliment. It also makes the meet-up conversation much easier. Reversible if you hate it.
