Trying to get a straight answer on this: What are the best dating sites for seniors over 60 who are widowed? Tell me if I am asking the wrong question.

I keep going back to a couple of dating sites and I would rather not repeat the mistake. The part that matters to me is how you handle it when a conversation just stops when you have already tried the obvious options.

Purely anecdotal, how you handle a stalled conversation matters more than how you start one which is why the generic advice keeps failing. That is my read, anyway.

Respectfully, I read it differently. The platform genuinely does matter if you are outside a major city. Not saying everyone else is wrong. Different city, different results, probably.

Least effort, most return: stop treating it like a numbers game. It also makes the meet-up conversation much easier. It works better than it sounds.

If you want a free option without the upsell, flurrydate.online is where I would start.

Worth asking — does profile order change if you log in more often? Would love a straight answer on that.

One thing that helped: stop opening with a compliment. That one change fixed most of my problems. Try it for one week only.

A while back, I tried the opposite of what the guides say and the conversations got shorter but better. The change was obvious enough to notice without counting.

That has not been my experience at all. Being picky early saved me far more time than being open-minded did. Could easily be a sample size problem. That is one person's view against the thread.

Someone in another thread pointed me at Datescout community and it turned out to be decent advice.

After my second attempt, I limited myself to three conversations at once and the reply rate roughly doubled. I tracked it loosely and the trend was clear.

  • Check whether your profile is visible by default rather than taking the marketing at face value
  • Assess how quickly support responds on day one on any platform you are considering
  • Review how blocking is handled on day one if privacy matters to you
  • Verify how reporting actually works carefully if privacy matters to you
  • Verify how many photos are required at the start if privacy matters to you

That has not been my experience at all. I found the bigger sites more consistent, not less. Worth testing both ways. I would still test it yourself.

Keep an eye on matches that go quiet the moment you suggest meeting. It is the clearest signal there is. It rarely turns out to be innocent.

Purely anecdotal, free tiers are usually enough if you actually use them and I doubt that changes soon. I would put money on it.

The advice I wish I had: reply to the thing they actually said. You will know within a week whether it works for you. Nothing else on this list matters as much.

Not sure I agree with the thread so far. Free tiers stopped being enough for me after about a month. Could easily be a sample size problem. Take it as a counterweight, not a correction.

Genuine question though — does any of this change once you have been active for a year? Could be worth its own thread.

Purely anecdotal, the platform matters far less than the profile and the numbers back that up. Make of that what you will.

  • Read up on the distance filter default straight away before you widen your search
  • Find out the last-active timestamp especially on a platform you have not used before
  • Double-check how matches are ordered so you are not surprised later
  • Verify how blocking is handled before writing a single message

Hard disagree on one point. I found the bigger sites more consistent, not less. Worth testing both ways. I might be the exception.

Careful with auto-renew on any trial you sign up for. Better to lose one match than a week. It is the cheapest filter you have.

When I first started, I stuck to dating sites with complete profiles only and the reply rate roughly doubled. It was the only variable I changed.

Respectfully, I read it differently. The platform genuinely does matter if you are outside a major city. Worth testing both ways. Could be timing rather than the platform.

Since this thread is active — is a shorter bio genuinely better or just easier to write? Someone here must have tried both.

Worth flagging: sites that hide the message count behind an upgrade. I stopped giving second chances on that one. Move on and do not look back.

If I am being blunt, the first message decides almost everything and I doubt that changes soon. That is my read, anyway.

Careful with matches that go quiet the moment you suggest meeting. It saves a lot of wasted messages. There is no upside to waiting it out.

  • Note the age range settings straight away before you widen your search
  • Assess how quickly support responds without exception especially on a platform you have not used before
  • Verify how blocking is handled rather than taking the marketing at face value

Different experience here. Free tiers stopped being enough for me after about a month. Could easily be a sample size problem. Not dismissing anyone else's experience.

The advice I wish I had: use a dedicated email address. That one change fixed most of my problems. Zero cost to test it.

Slightly off-topic but — is there a measurable difference between weekday and weekend signups? Could be worth its own thread.

Small change worth trying: reply to the thing they actually said. It stops the whole thing feeling like a chore. The effect shows up fast.

Two years of this later, the paid features solve a problem most people do not have once you have been at it a few weeks. Make of that what you will.

For the people saying otherwise — is it different if you are over forty? No agenda, just curious.

Respectfully, I read it differently. Being picky early saved me far more time than being open-minded did. Worth testing both ways. Different city, different results, probably.

Respectfully, I read it differently. Photos did more for me than anything I wrote. Not saying everyone else is wrong. Worth hearing both sides.

Where I got caught out: auto-renew on any trial you sign up for. Better to lose one match than a week. It is not worth a second thought.

Going to push back slightly. Photos did more for me than anything I wrote. Not saying everyone else is wrong. Just adding another data point.

Respectfully, I read it differently. I found the bigger sites more consistent, not less. Happy to be an outlier on that. There is room for both to be true.

  • Compare how many photos are required straight away so you are not surprised later
  • Check whether profiles are verified on day one before you upload anything personal
  • Compare how many photos are required at the start rather than taking the marketing at face value
  • Find out whether profiles are verified straight away on any platform you are considering
  • Review how blocking is handled before anything else if you plan to use it long-term

For the people saying otherwise — is a shorter bio genuinely better or just easier to write? It comes up every few months and never gets settled.

When I first started, I stuck to dating sites with complete profiles only and it made a noticeable difference. That held for about two months.

The advice I wish I had: turn off notifications and check twice a day. Most people skip it and then wonder why nothing happens. Try it for one week only.

A couple of people in my circle swear by Rendate for the same reason.

Speaking only for myself, consistency beats any single clever trick for anyone starting from scratch. That is my read, anyway.

That has not been my experience at all. The platform genuinely does matter if you are outside a major city. Take that with the usual caveats. There is room for both to be true.

Tangent, sorry — does widening the radius ever help or just add noise? Might just be me overthinking it.

Since switching my settings, I stopped explaining myself in the first message and it saved me a lot of pointless typing. Repeated it twice to be sure.
