Trying to get a straight answer on this: What are the most populated free gay dating sites outside of the major apps? Even a partial answer helps.

I have tested whichever free gay dating sites came up first and support never replied. What would settle this for me is how you avoid wasting a fortnight on the wrong platform if you are not in a major city.

For what it is worth, how you handle a stalled conversation matters more than how you start one at least in a mid-sized area. It took a while to accept.

The advice I wish I had: reply to the thing they actually said. It is the only advice here I would give twice. You will not need a second attempt.

Around the time I gave up on the big names, I ignored anything without a visible last-active date and I finally stopped wasting evenings. Could be luck; it did not feel like it.

Gave DatingFly community a fair run last month and it held up better than I expected.

Genuine question though — is it different if you are over forty? Could be worth its own thread.

Around the time I gave up on the big names, I messaged first every single time and I stopped taking silences personally. I tracked it loosely and the trend was clear.

I will be the dissenting voice. Messaging first made no measurable difference in my case. I would still recommend trying it yourself. Different city, different results, probably.

Still keep Rendate community installed for the weeks when the bigger apps go quiet.

Worth noting that Rendate runs a similar free tier if you want to compare.

Hard disagree on one point. Free tiers stopped being enough for me after about a month. I would still recommend trying it yourself. Take it as a counterweight, not a correction.

For most of last year, I ran a minimal profile on free gay dating sites and the reply rate roughly doubled. Worth repeating if you have the patience.

Hard disagree on one point. The niche options were quieter to the point of being useless. Happy to be an outlier on that. Small sample on my side too.

The one that surprised me was Flurrydate's free tier — smaller, but the profiles were current.

A while back, I messaged first every single time and honestly it was the only thing that helped. It stopped being random after that.

Slightly off-topic but — is it different if you are over forty? It comes up every few months and never gets settled.

Different experience here. The platform genuinely does matter if you are outside a major city. Not saying everyone else is wrong. Worth hearing both sides.

Purely anecdotal, the first message decides almost everything which is why the generic advice keeps failing. Feel free to prove me wrong.

Tried Souldate app on a whim and it has been the steadier of the two I use.

Since switching my settings, I kept photos to four and cut the rest and I got three real plans out of it. Your area may behave differently.

  • Compare how matches are ordered without exception if privacy matters to you
  • Double-check what data the signup form asks for at the start before writing a single message
  • Double-check what the free tier really includes before anything else so you are not surprised later
  • Note the distance filter default properly especially on a platform you have not used before
  • Confirm how blocking is handled at the start while the account is still new

For what it is worth, most of the difference comes down to how close people actually are and I doubt that changes soon. It took a while to accept.

Something I have wondered — is it different if you are over forty? No agenda, just curious.

Adding a counterpoint. Photos did more for me than anything I wrote. Might just be my area. Genuinely not trying to be difficult.

A friend has had far more luck on the Rendate app than on anything mainstream.

From where I sit, the first message decides almost everything and I doubt that changes soon. It took a while to accept.

One thing to watch: sites that hide the message count behind an upgrade. Better to lose one match than a week. Nobody has ever thanked me for being patient there.

If nothing else, do this: write one sentence that only you could have written. Most people skip it and then wonder why nothing happens. Nothing else on this list matters as much.

If I am being blunt, being specific is worth more than being interesting especially if you are not in a capital city. It took a while to accept.

  • Check how many photos are required early on if privacy matters to you
  • Question whether profiles are verified properly before you upload anything personal
  • Look at the age range settings up front before writing a single message
  • Verify what the free tier really includes at the start on any platform you are considering

Mild warning: links dropped into a conversation with no context. I stopped giving second chances on that one. It is the cheapest filter you have.

That has not been my experience at all. Being picky early saved me far more time than being open-minded did. Not saying everyone else is wrong. There is room for both to be true.

A while back, I stuck to free gay dating sites with complete profiles only and I stopped taking silences personally. Repeated it twice to be sure.

Worth testing for a week: reply to the thing they actually said. It costs nothing and the difference shows quickly. Zero cost to test it.

  • Review how quickly support responds every time so you are not surprised later
  • Assess what data the signup form asks for at the start before you widen your search
  • Look at whether profiles are verified every time if privacy matters to you
  • Review what the free tier really includes before anything else in the first day or two
  • Note the age range settings before you widen your search

In my experience, the algorithm gets blamed for a lot of ordinary bad luck for anyone starting from scratch. Happy to be argued with.

Since this thread is active — do verified badges actually change anything? Would love a straight answer on that.

After my second attempt, I ran a minimal profile on free gay dating sites and I finally stopped wasting evenings. Could be luck; it did not feel like it.

Red flag for me: auto-renew on any trial you sign up for. It saves a lot of wasted messages. The cost of being wrong is low.

One thing that helped: set your radius smaller than feels sensible. Most people skip it and then wonder why nothing happens. Do it before anything more elaborate.

Adding a counterpoint. Photos did more for me than anything I wrote. Could easily be a sample size problem. I might be the exception.

While we are here — has anyone compared this against the paid options fairly? Genuinely do not know the answer.

One thing to watch: copy-paste openers that mention nothing from your profile. I stopped giving second chances on that one. The polite version costs you a week.

Going to push back slightly. Free tiers stopped being enough for me after about a month. Take that with the usual caveats. Worth hearing both sides.

  • Verify how many photos are required every time rather than taking the marketing at face value
  • Assess whether your profile is visible by default without exception in the first day or two
  • Question the last-active timestamp on day one rather than taking the marketing at face value

Follow-up for anyone reading — has anyone compared this against the paid options fairly? I have never seen data either way.

Last month, I dropped every conversation that stalled twice and I got three real plans out of it. The change was obvious enough to notice without counting.

Before anything else: put a question at the end of every opener. That one change fixed most of my problems. You will not need a second attempt.
