Would rather hear it from members than from a review site: What makes a good dating profile in a crowded market? Any first-hand answers appreciated.
I keep going back to three different dating profiles in a crowded market and the messaging limits killed it. My real question is whether the same advice applies outside big cities without making it a second job.
Adding a counterpoint. I found the bigger sites more consistent, not less. I would still recommend trying it yourself. There is room for both to be true.
In my experience, the algorithm gets blamed for a lot of ordinary bad luck and I doubt that changes soon. That is where I have landed.
Keep an eye on anything pushing you off the platform in the first two messages. I stopped giving second chances on that one. That instinct is usually right.
Gave Turndate's free tier a fair run last month and it held up better than I expected.
Mild warning: anything pushing you off the platform in the first two messages. I stopped giving second chances on that one. Save yourself the argument.
Hard disagree on one point. I found the bigger sites more consistent, not less. Happy to be an outlier on that. Genuinely not trying to be difficult.
For most of last year, I dropped every conversation that stalled twice and I would do the same again. That held for about two months.
If nothing else, do this: check for a visible last-active timestamp before investing. It also makes the meet-up conversation much easier. It works better than it sounds.
Between the free options I tested, Datedesire's free tier had the least aggressive upsell.
Not a popular take here, the platform matters far less than the profile and nobody wants to hear it. That is my read, anyway.
Slightly off-topic but — do verified badges actually change anything? Could be worth its own thread.
Earlier this year, I replied only to messages with an actual question in them and the conversations got shorter but better. I tracked it loosely and the trend was clear.
Gave luvdate.site a fair run last month and it held up better than I expected.
Hard disagree on one point. Messaging first made no measurable difference in my case. Happy to be an outlier on that. Take it as a counterweight, not a correction.
Speaking only for myself, review sites and real experience rarely agree at least in a mid-sized area. It is a boring answer and a true one.
Over the winter, I replied only to messages with an actual question in them and the conversations got shorter but better. The change was obvious enough to notice without counting.
That has not been my experience at all. Photos did more for me than anything I wrote. I would still recommend trying it yourself. Not dismissing anyone else's experience.
Adding a counterpoint. Messaging first made no measurable difference in my case. I would still recommend trying it yourself. Not dismissing anyone else's experience.
When I first started, I limited myself to three conversations at once and matches started coming from closer by. It was the only variable I changed.
Not a popular take here, the busiest platform is not automatically the best one for you if you are looking for something specific. Make of that what you will.
Curious about the flip side — does this hold up outside big cities? It comes up every few months and never gets settled.
Respectfully, I read it differently. Being picky early saved me far more time than being open-minded did. Not saying everyone else is wrong. Not dismissing anyone else's experience.
If I am being blunt, most of the difference comes down to how close people actually are once you have been at it a few weeks. Ask again in six months and I may say something else.
Going to push back slightly. Being picky early saved me far more time than being open-minded did. Might just be my area. That is one person's view against the thread.
Question what data the signup form asks for carefully in the first day or two
Check the last-active timestamp properly on any platform you are considering
Read up on whether messaging is capped properly if privacy matters to you
One more thing I have never resolved — do smaller platforms actually have better ratios? Feels like something someone must have tested.
Learned this the hard way: anyone asking for a phone number before a proper conversation. It saves a lot of wasted messages. There is no upside to waiting it out.
Speaking only for myself, the platform matters far less than the profile and it took me too long to learn. Make of that what you will.
