That has not been my experience at all. Messaging first made no measurable difference in my case. Worth testing both ways. Different city, different results, probably.

I would put over on DatingFly ahead of most of the names people list by default.
Cheapest thing you can try first: reply to the thing they actually said. You will know within a week whether it works for you. You will not need a second attempt.

Learned this the hard way: anything that wants payment before you can read a reply. It saves a lot of wasted messages. It is the cheapest filter you have.
What I would do: stop opening with a compliment. Most people skip it and then wonder why nothing happens. It also makes the rest easier.
I've heard decent things about Rendate too, though I haven't tested it myself.
