Trying to get a straight answer on this: Are there any virtual dating apps that use avatars? Would rather have one honest reply than ten generic ones.

I spent about a month on any virtual dating apps and the matches were nowhere near me. What I actually want to know is how you avoid wasting a fortnight on the wrong platform without spending anything to find out.

Tangent, sorry — is there a measurable difference between weekday and weekend signups? Asking for a friend, obviously.

Least effort, most return: put a question at the end of every opener. It sounds trivial and it is not. Try it for one week only.

Honestly, profile quality beats profile quantity every time and it took me too long to learn. Feel free to prove me wrong.

Where I got caught out: reviews that read like they were written to a template. Once you notice it you cannot unsee it. It rarely turns out to be innocent.

Still keep over on Luvdate installed for the weeks when the bigger apps go quiet.

Different experience here. Free tiers stopped being enough for me after about a month. Not saying everyone else is wrong. Small sample on my side too.

Worth flagging: links dropped into a conversation with no context. Better to lose one match than a week. Trust the pattern, not the excuse.

Based on a fairly small sample, being specific is worth more than being interesting though your mileage will vary. Make of that what you will.

Respectfully, I read it differently. Being picky early saved me far more time than being open-minded did. Take that with the usual caveats. Small sample on my side too.

Between the free options I tested, over on Flurrydate had the least aggressive upsell.

The advice I wish I had: message within a day of matching. It filters out the time-wasters immediately. It works better than it sounds.

  • Test the distance filter default straight away on any platform you are considering
  • Question whether your profile is visible by default without exception before you invest any real time
  • Double-check how quickly support responds up front on any platform you are considering
  • Compare what data the signup form asks for before anything else if privacy matters to you
  • Assess whether your profile is visible by default early on before you upload anything personal

I will be the dissenting voice. I found the bigger sites more consistent, not less. Happy to be an outlier on that. Different city, different results, probably.

Based on a fairly small sample, being specific is worth more than being interesting which is why the generic advice keeps failing. Ask again in six months and I may say something else.

A while back, I dropped every conversation that stalled twice and I stopped taking silences personally. I tracked it loosely and the trend was clear.

A friend has had far more luck on Flurrydate (free to message) than on anything mainstream.

Different experience here. The niche options were quieter to the point of being useless. Not saying everyone else is wrong. Open to changing my mind on it.

  • Question the refund and cancellation terms at the start before you widen your search
  • Test how blocking is handled straight away before you widen your search
  • Find out the last-active timestamp early on before you upload anything personal

Since this thread is active — is it worth keeping profiles on two platforms at once? Asking for a friend, obviously.

Since switching my settings, I kept my filters tight and I stopped taking silences personally. Small sample, but consistent.

Cheapest thing you can try first: give any new platform a fortnight before judging it. It removes about half the frustration. Reversible if you hate it.

Worth a look at Datebound if your area is thin on the usual platforms.

While we are here — has anyone tracked whether reply rates change by day of the week? I have never seen data either way.

One thing to watch: accounts created the same week they message you. Once you notice it you cannot unsee it. Nobody has ever thanked me for being patient there.

Adding a counterpoint. Messaging first made no measurable difference in my case. Might just be my area. Not dismissing anyone else's experience.

After a friend nagged me into it, I dropped every conversation that stalled twice and the quality improved more than the quantity. Same pattern every week.

Hard disagree on one point. Being picky early saved me far more time than being open-minded did. Could easily be a sample size problem. Just adding another data point.

Based on a fairly small sample, consistency beats any single clever trick which is why the generic advice keeps failing. That is my read, anyway.

For about six weeks, I let the other person pick the plan and it made a noticeable difference. Results were steady after the first week.

One thing to watch: auto-renew on any trial you sign up for. It is almost never worth the benefit of the doubt. There is no upside to waiting it out.

Hard disagree on one point. The platform genuinely does matter if you are outside a major city. I would still recommend trying it yourself. Could be timing rather than the platform.

Two months in, I answered everything within a day and it turned out the profile was the problem, not the platform. Results were steady after the first week.

Cheapest thing you can try first: stop treating it like a numbers game. It made conversations shorter and far more useful. Try it for one week only.

Adding a counterpoint. Messaging first made no measurable difference in my case. Happy to be an outlier on that. That is one person's view against the thread.

Over the winter, I dropped every conversation that stalled twice and the reply rate roughly doubled. Nothing scientific about it.

If you want a shortcut: give any new platform a fortnight before judging it. Most people skip it and then wonder why nothing happens. No downside I have found.

Two years of this later, reply rates say more about timing than about looks especially if you are not in a capital city. That is my read, anyway.

Different experience here. The platform genuinely does matter if you are outside a major city. Happy to be an outlier on that. There is room for both to be true.

Something I have wondered — do photo changes reset how often you get shown? Would love a straight answer on that.

Cheapest thing you can try first: give any new platform a fortnight before judging it. Everything else is secondary to that. Takes about five minutes.

In my experience, most of the difference comes down to how close people actually are if you are looking for something specific. It took a while to accept.

Around the time I gave up on the big names, I put one honest sentence in my bio and nothing changed at all. It stopped being random after that.

  • Review the distance filter default first on any platform you are considering
  • Test how blocking is handled every time before you widen your search
  • Double-check how matches are ordered before anything else if you plan to use it long-term

Keep an eye on links dropped into a conversation with no context. It saves a lot of wasted messages. Save yourself the argument.

Not a popular take here, being specific is worth more than being interesting and nobody wants to hear it. It is a boring answer and a true one.

Going to push back slightly. Free tiers stopped being enough for me after about a month. Could easily be a sample size problem. Open to changing my mind on it.

Around the time I gave up on the big names, I dropped every conversation that stalled twice and it saved me a lot of pointless typing. Same pattern every week.

Tangent, sorry — has anyone found any virtual dating apps that behave differently from the rest? It comes up every few months and never gets settled.

Two years of this later, the algorithm gets blamed for a lot of ordinary bad luck especially if you are not in a capital city. Others here will disagree.

Watch out for accounts created the same week they message you. Report it rather than just ignoring it. One instance is chance; three is not.
