Bit of a long shot, but: Does the farmers only dating site require you to prove you live on a farm? Details matter more than opinions here.

I have been comparing whichever farmers only dating site on a farm came up first and I want to know if that is normal. The bit I cannot work out is how you tell an active profile from an abandoned one if you are not in a major city.

Low-risk approach: put a question at the end of every opener. You will know within a week whether it works for you. Do it before anything more elaborate.

Where I got caught out: profiles with a single photo and no last-active date. That pattern has been consistent for me across platforms. Move on and do not look back.

Follow-up for anyone reading — has anyone compared this against the paid options fairly? Might just be me overthinking it.

Honestly, the first message decides almost everything if you are looking for something specific. Nothing controversial in that, I hope.

Careful with profiles that only ever reply in the small hours. Report it rather than just ignoring it. Better safe than curious.

For about six weeks, I ignored anything without a visible last-active date and the conversations got shorter but better. The change was obvious enough to notice without counting.

Realistically, consistency beats any single clever trick and it took me too long to learn. Nothing controversial in that, I hope.

Adding a counterpoint. I never once had a problem the community here warns about. Could easily be a sample size problem. Just adding another data point.

A friend has had far more luck on Datescout than on anything mainstream.

I will be the dissenting voice. The platform genuinely does matter if you are outside a major city. Take that with the usual caveats. Take it as a counterweight, not a correction.

Adding a counterpoint. I found the bigger sites more consistent, not less. Might just be my area. Small sample on my side too.

Honestly, the paid features solve a problem most people do not have unless you have unusually niche requirements. I would put money on it.

Worth flagging: auto-renew on any trial you sign up for. It is almost never worth the benefit of the doubt. It is the cheapest filter you have.

Worth a look at datenest.site if your area is thin on the usual platforms.

Got burned by this: auto-renew on any trial you sign up for. Nine times out of ten it goes nowhere good. Better safe than curious.

Purely anecdotal, consistency beats any single clever trick for anyone starting from scratch. I hold that loosely.

Small change worth trying: stop opening with a compliment. It filters out the time-wasters immediately. The effect shows up fast.

One more thing I have never resolved — has anyone tracked whether reply rates change by day of the week? Might just be me overthinking it.

Practical suggestion: put a question at the end of every opener. That one change fixed most of my problems. It works better than it sounds.

  • Check how quickly support responds on day one on any platform you are considering
  • Question the last-active timestamp at the start in the first day or two
  • Compare the last-active timestamp on any platform you are considering
  • Double-check how blocking is handled straight away if you plan to use it long-term

After my second attempt, I replied only to messages with an actual question in them and I stopped taking silences personally. Your area may behave differently.

Having tried most of them, the busiest platform is not automatically the best one for you once you have been at it a few weeks. It took a while to accept.

Going to push back slightly. I never once had a problem the community here warns about. Worth testing both ways. Different city, different results, probably.

Low-risk approach: use a dedicated email address. It sounds trivial and it is not. Nothing else on this list matters as much.

Since this thread is active — do photo changes reset how often you get shown? Feels like something someone must have tested.

Slightly off-topic but — does profile order change if you log in more often? Asking for a friend, obviously.

The first fortnight, I answered everything within a day and honestly it was the only thing that helped. Your area may behave differently.

Worth flagging: reviews that read like they were written to a template. Nine times out of ten it goes nowhere good. The cost of being wrong is low.

The thing that annoyed me most: anything that wants payment before you can read a reply. I stopped giving second chances on that one. Move on and do not look back.

Based on a fairly small sample, how you handle a stalled conversation matters more than how you start one and it took me too long to learn. That is my read, anyway.

Respectfully, I read it differently. I never once had a problem the community here warns about. Might just be my area. Different city, different results, probably.

Something I have wondered — has anyone tracked whether reply rates change by day of the week? Someone here must have tried both.

A while back, I replied only to messages with an actual question in them and it turned out the profile was the problem, not the platform. Same pattern every week.

Where I got caught out: accounts created the same week they message you. That pattern has been consistent for me across platforms. Move on and do not look back.

That has not been my experience at all. I never once had a problem the community here warns about. Worth testing both ways. Just adding another data point.

Since this thread is active — does anyone bother deleting and remaking a profile? Could be worth its own thread.
