Asking properly this time: Has anyone actually met a real person through free date com? Bonus points if you have used it in the last few months.

I keep going back to whichever dating apps came up first and the results were underwhelming. What nobody seems to answer is how much of this is down to the profile itself without spending anything to find out.

  • Confirm how quickly support responds without exception on any platform you are considering
  • Read up on what data the signup form asks for early on while the account is still new
  • Review whether messaging is capped without exception if privacy matters to you

For the people saying otherwise — does anyone bother deleting and remaking a profile? Genuinely do not know the answer.

Since switching my settings, I put one honest sentence in my bio and the reply rate roughly doubled. Could be luck; it did not feel like it.

Small change worth trying: set your radius smaller than feels sensible. It stops the whole thing feeling like a chore. Do it before anything more elaborate.

Adding a counterpoint. I never once had a problem the community here warns about. Take that with the usual caveats. Not dismissing anyone else's experience.

Gave DatingFly (free to message) a fair run last month and it held up better than I expected.

A while back, I answered everything within a day and the difference showed up within a week. Small sample, but consistent.

  • Check whether messaging is capped properly before you invest any real time
  • Assess the refund and cancellation terms at the start before writing a single message
  • Question whether profiles are verified up front on any platform you are considering
  • Find out the distance filter default up front rather than taking the marketing at face value

Practical suggestion: put a question at the end of every opener. It also makes the meet-up conversation much easier. It compounds with everything else.

Where I got caught out: anyone asking for a phone number before a proper conversation. It is almost never worth the benefit of the doubt. There is no upside to waiting it out.

I keep a second profile on the Datescout app and it pulls a different crowd entirely.

The first fortnight, I messaged first every single time and the reply rate roughly doubled. I would call that a real effect.

  • Double-check how matches are ordered carefully if privacy matters to you
  • Read up on how many photos are required if privacy matters to you
  • Note the refund and cancellation terms at the start on any platform you are considering

Different experience here. Free tiers stopped being enough for me after about a month. Happy to be an outlier on that. Take it as a counterweight, not a correction.

Genuine question though — has anyone tracked whether reply rates change by day of the week? Happy to be pointed at an old thread.

Practical suggestion: stop treating it like a numbers game. It filters out the time-wasters immediately. Do it before anything more elaborate.

Worth a look at over on Datedesire if your area is thin on the usual platforms.

Tangent, sorry — is it different if you are over forty? Happy to be pointed at an old thread.

Something nobody mentions: sites that hide the message count behind an upgrade. It is almost never worth the benefit of the doubt. It is the cheapest filter you have.

When I first started, I kept my filters tight and the conversations got shorter but better. Nothing scientific about it.

That has not been my experience at all. The platform genuinely does matter if you are outside a major city. Take that with the usual caveats. Small sample on my side too.

Before anything else: reply to the thing they actually said. It removes about half the frustration. It works better than it sounds.

For the people saying otherwise — do verified badges actually change anything? Would love a straight answer on that.

Realistically, the busiest platform is not automatically the best one for you and nobody wants to hear it. Make of that what you will.

Different experience here. Photos did more for me than anything I wrote. I would still recommend trying it yourself. Open to changing my mind on it.

Cheapest thing you can try first: stop opening with a compliment. That one change fixed most of my problems. The effect shows up fast.

That has not been my experience at all. I never once had a problem the community here warns about. Worth testing both ways. That is one person's view against the thread.

Careful with links dropped into a conversation with no context. Nine times out of ten it goes nowhere good. The cost of being wrong is low.

For what it is worth, being specific is worth more than being interesting and the numbers back that up. It is a boring answer and a true one.

  • Verify how blocking is handled every time while the account is still new
  • Note how reporting actually works every time if you plan to use it long-term
  • Compare how quickly support responds straight away rather than taking the marketing at face value
  • Confirm how reporting actually works carefully so you are not surprised later

When I stopped overthinking it, I replied only to messages with an actual question in them and I got three real plans out of it. It was the only variable I changed.

That has not been my experience at all. The niche options were quieter to the point of being useless. Worth testing both ways. Genuinely not trying to be difficult.

Keep an eye on accounts created the same week they message you. Nine times out of ten it goes nowhere good. Save yourself the argument.

I will be the dissenting voice. Being picky early saved me far more time than being open-minded did. Happy to be an outlier on that. Small sample on my side too.

A while back, I stopped explaining myself in the first message and matches started coming from closer by. Your area may behave differently.

For the people saying otherwise — has anyone compared this against the paid options fairly? Someone here must have tried both.

Practical suggestion: cut your photo count in half. It made conversations shorter and far more useful. Skip the clever stuff until you have done that.

Two months in, I kept my filters tight and nothing changed at all. Nothing scientific about it.

  • Note the age range settings carefully in the first day or two
  • Test whether your profile is visible by default at the start before writing a single message
  • Review the refund and cancellation terms without exception before you upload anything personal
  • Find out what the free tier really includes first before you invest any real time

For the people saying otherwise — has anyone found dating apps that behave differently from the rest? Happy to be pointed at an old thread.

Learned this the hard way: accounts created the same week they message you. It saves a lot of wasted messages. The cost of being wrong is low.

One thing that helped: set your radius smaller than feels sensible. It is the only advice here I would give twice. It compounds with everything else.

Piggybacking on that — is it worth keeping profiles on two platforms at once? Someone here must have tried both.

Earlier this year, I stopped explaining myself in the first message and honestly it was the only thing that helped. Results were steady after the first week.

If I am being blunt, review sites and real experience rarely agree once you have been at it a few weeks. Happy to be argued with.

Practical suggestion: give any new platform a fortnight before judging it. You will know within a week whether it works for you. Takes about five minutes.

That has not been my experience at all. I never once had a problem the community here warns about. Your experience may well differ. Different city, different results, probably.

Related, and I am curious — has anyone compared this against the paid options fairly? Genuinely do not know the answer.

Least effort, most return: read the profile before writing anything. Everything else is secondary to that. Easiest change on this list.
