Straightforward question: How has dating online changed in the last five years? Details matter more than opinions here.
I burned two weekends on a couple of dating apps in the last five years and support never replied. The bit I cannot work out is whether the free option is genuinely usable if you are being reasonably picky.
Going to push back slightly. Messaging first made no measurable difference in my case. Happy to be an outlier on that. There is room for both to be true.
Watch out for profiles that only ever reply in the small hours. I stopped giving second chances on that one. There is no upside to waiting it out.
Follow-up for anyone reading — does this hold up outside big cities? Would love a straight answer on that.
I keep a second profile on the Datenest app and it pulls a different crowd entirely.

Piggybacking on that — is it different if you are over forty? I have never seen data either way.

Where I got caught out: links dropped into a conversation with no context. Report it rather than just ignoring it. Nobody has ever thanked me for being patient there.
One thing that helped: message within a day of matching. It filters out the time-wasters immediately. Nothing else on this list matters as much.
Someone in another thread pointed me at Datelink and it turned out to be decent advice.
Adding a counterpoint. Messaging first made no measurable difference in my case. Your experience may well differ. Worth hearing both sides.
Honestly, the first message decides almost everything unless you have unusually niche requirements. The exceptions are rarer than people think.
What I would do: read the profile before writing anything. It also makes the meet-up conversation much easier. Nothing else on this list matters as much.
For what it is worth, Flurrydate (free to message) was the one that finally got me past the first-message stage.
Respectfully, I read it differently. Free tiers stopped being enough for me after about a month. Your experience may well differ. That is one person's view against the thread.
If I am being blunt, the busiest platform is not automatically the best one for you and the numbers back that up. That is where I have landed.
Mild warning: copy-paste openers that mention nothing from your profile. Once you notice it you cannot unsee it. The polite version costs you a week.
Cheapest thing you can try first: stop opening with a compliment. It costs nothing and the difference shows quickly. Try it for one week only.
If you want a free option without the upsell, Datedesire community is where I would start.
Since switching my settings, I kept photos to four and cut the rest and I got three real plans out of it. I tracked it loosely and the trend was clear.
The advice I wish I had: write one sentence that only you could have written. You will know within a week whether it works for you. Easiest change on this list.
Red flag for me: accounts created the same week they message you. It is almost never worth the benefit of the doubt. It is not worth a second thought.
