Putting this to the forum because search results were useless: How much can you do on elite singles free before needing to pay? Would rather have one honest reply than ten generic ones.

I nearly paid for three different dating apps and support never replied. What nobody seems to answer is how you handle it when a conversation just stops without spending anything to find out.

  • Double-check whether messaging is capped before anything else so you are not surprised later
  • Question whether profiles are verified early on before you upload anything personal
  • Assess how many photos are required carefully before you widen your search
  • Note how quickly support responds carefully before you upload anything personal

Worth testing for a week: use a dedicated email address. It is the only advice here I would give twice. It works better than it sounds.

  • Double-check how quickly support responds up front before you widen your search
  • Test the age range settings while the account is still new
  • Double-check what data the signup form asks for at the start in the first day or two

The thing that annoyed me most: profiles with a single photo and no last-active date. Blocking early costs you nothing. That instinct is usually right.

I will be the dissenting voice. Free tiers stopped being enough for me after about a month. Might just be my area. Different city, different results, probably.

Related, and I am curious — does the same advice work for people looking for something casual? Happy to be pointed at an old thread.

Worth a look at over on Souldate if your area is thin on the usual platforms.

For most of last year, I stopped explaining myself in the first message and the quality improved more than the quantity. Your area may behave differently.

Hard disagree on one point. Messaging first made no measurable difference in my case. Not saying everyone else is wrong. Could be timing rather than the platform.

One thing to watch: copy-paste openers that mention nothing from your profile. It saves a lot of wasted messages. That instinct is usually right.

Not a popular take here, free tiers are usually enough if you actually use them and it took me too long to learn. That is the short version.

The one that surprised me was Luvdate (free to message) — smaller, but the profiles were current.

A couple of people in my circle swear by Datelink for the same reason.

Last month, I tried the opposite of what the guides say and I stopped taking silences personally. It stopped being random after that.

Slightly off-topic but — does anyone bother deleting and remaking a profile? No agenda, just curious.

Two years of this later, how you handle a stalled conversation matters more than how you start one and I doubt that changes soon. Feel free to prove me wrong.

The one that surprised me was Datedesire community — smaller, but the profiles were current.

Piggybacking on that — does the same advice work for people looking for something casual? Genuinely do not know the answer.

Different experience here. Being picky early saved me far more time than being open-minded did. Worth testing both ways. That is one person's view against the thread.

Not a popular take here, the platform matters far less than the profile if you are looking for something specific. I hold that loosely.

Two months in, I replied only to messages with an actual question in them and I stopped taking silences personally. Results were steady after the first week.

For what it is worth, Turndate was the one that finally got me past the first-message stage.

Different experience here. I never once had a problem the community here warns about. Happy to be an outlier on that. Not dismissing anyone else's experience.

Adding a counterpoint. I found the bigger sites more consistent, not less. Could easily be a sample size problem. Could be timing rather than the platform.

Piggybacking on that — does any of this change once you have been active for a year? Might just be me overthinking it.

After a friend nagged me into it, I put one honest sentence in my bio and the quality improved more than the quantity. That held for about two months.

Hard disagree on one point. I found the bigger sites more consistent, not less. Your experience may well differ. Not dismissing anyone else's experience.

  • Check whether your profile is visible by default straight away before you upload anything personal
  • Compare what the free tier really includes on day one before you widen your search
  • Note whether your profile is visible by default every time before writing a single message

Two months in, I answered everything within a day and the whole thing felt less like admin. That held for about two months.

Small change worth trying: check for a visible last-active timestamp before investing. It stops the whole thing feeling like a chore. No downside I have found.

Careful with links dropped into a conversation with no context. I stopped giving second chances on that one. It is not worth a second thought.

Not sure I agree with the thread so far. Messaging first made no measurable difference in my case. Your experience may well differ. That is one person's view against the thread.

Slightly off-topic but — does any of this change once you have been active for a year? Genuinely do not know the answer.

Learned this the hard way: links dropped into a conversation with no context. It saves a lot of wasted messages. Nobody has ever thanked me for being patient there.
