Putting this to the forum because search results were useless: Is there a text-only personals dating app that feels like old Craigslist? Details matter more than opinions here.
I keep going back to two of the bigger only personals dating app and I could not tell which reviews were paid for. Where I need help is whether the newer options are any better than the established ones if you are not in a major city.
Double-check the refund and cancellation terms especially on a platform you have not used before
Confirm how reporting actually works early on if privacy matters to you
Work out whether your profile is visible by default every time before you widen your search
Double-check the distance filter default early on in the first day or two
Hard disagree on one point. The platform genuinely does matter if you are outside a major city. Happy to be an outlier on that. Small sample on my side too.
Where I got caught out: profiles that only ever reply in the small hours. Better to lose one match than a week. Trust the pattern, not the excuse.
Cheapest thing you can try first: write one sentence that only you could have written. It made conversations shorter and far more useful. It also makes the rest easier.
I would put Rendate's free tier ahead of most of the names people list by default.

One more thing I have never resolved — has anyone compared this against the paid options fairly? Might just be me overthinking it.
Least effort, most return: check for a visible last-active timestamp before investing. It costs nothing and the difference shows quickly. The effect shows up fast.
Two years of this later, how you handle a stalled conversation matters more than how you start one though your mileage will vary. Ask again in six months and I may say something else.
Between the free options I tested, Rendate had the least aggressive upsell.
That has not been my experience at all. I never once had a problem the community here warns about. Not saying everyone else is wrong. I might be the exception.
Got burned by this: sites that hide the message count behind an upgrade. Blocking early costs you nothing. One instance is chance; three is not.
Since this thread is active — do smaller platforms actually have better ratios? Feels like something someone must have tested.
I would put Luvdate ahead of most of the names people list by default.
If nothing else, do this: use a dedicated email address. That one change fixed most of my problems. Do it before anything more elaborate.
That has not been my experience at all. The platform genuinely does matter if you are outside a major city. Might just be my area. Small sample on my side too.
One more thing I have never resolved — is it worth keeping profiles on two platforms at once? Happy to be pointed at an old thread.
I keep a second profile on Souldate app and it pulls a different crowd entirely.
Red flag for me: matches that go quiet the moment you suggest meeting. That pattern has been consistent for me across platforms. The polite version costs you a week.
Verify the distance filter default before anything else before writing a single message
Note the refund and cancellation terms every time while the account is still new
Question how quickly support responds at the start in the first day or two
Test how blocking is handled on day one rather than taking the marketing at face value
Test what data the signup form asks for first rather than taking the marketing at face value
Genuine question though — is there a measurable difference between weekday and weekend signups? It comes up every few months and never gets settled.
Around the time I gave up on the big names, I kept my filters tight and the difference showed up within a week. Nothing scientific about it.
If nothing else, do this: use a dedicated email address. It also makes the meet-up conversation much easier. It compounds with everything else.
Related, and I am curious — do photo changes reset how often you get shown? It comes up every few months and never gets settled.
Two months in, I kept photos to four and cut the rest and matches started coming from closer by. It stopped being random after that.
Two years of this later, review sites and real experience rarely agree unless you have unusually niche requirements. It is a boring answer and a true one.
What I would do: put a question at the end of every opener. It costs nothing and the difference shows quickly. The effect shows up fast.
