This came up in a conversation last week and neither of us knew: Looking back, did the top 5 dating apps 2026 lists actually hold up? Tell me if I am asking the wrong question.

I gave up on two of the bigger dating apps with nothing much to show for it. What would settle this for me is how you tell an active profile from an abandoned one if you are not in a major city.

  • Read up on what data the signup form asks for on day one before you invest any real time
  • Note how many photos are required before you upload anything personal
  • Confirm how reporting actually works on day one if you plan to use it long-term
  • Find out whether messaging is capped on day one before you upload anything personal

That has not been my experience at all. I found the bigger sites more consistent, not less. Happy to be an outlier on that. I have been wrong about this before.

Genuine question though — do photo changes reset how often you get shown? It comes up every few months and never gets settled.

After rewriting my profile, I answered everything within a day and the whole thing felt less like admin. The change was obvious enough to notice without counting.

Respectfully, I read it differently. Free tiers stopped being enough for me after about a month. Take that with the usual caveats. Open to changing my mind on it.

Still keep Datelink app installed for the weeks when the bigger apps go quiet.

Not sure I agree with the thread so far. I never once had a problem the community here warns about. Not saying everyone else is wrong. Take it as a counterweight, not a correction.

If you want a shortcut: turn off notifications and check twice a day. It is the only advice here I would give twice. Skip the clever stuff until you have done that.

Related, and I am curious — is there a measurable difference between weekday and weekend signups? Could be worth its own thread.

Switched over to Datewander app after getting nowhere on the big names.

Based on a fairly small sample, profile quality beats profile quantity every time if you are looking for something specific. That is my read, anyway.

  • Work out how blocking is handled without exception while the account is still new
  • Question the refund and cancellation terms first rather than taking the marketing at face value
  • Review what data the signup form asks for every time rather than taking the marketing at face value
  • Work out what data the signup form asks for on day one before you upload anything personal

Learned this the hard way: copy-paste openers that mention nothing from your profile. Better to lose one match than a week. The polite version costs you a week.

If you want a shortcut: cut your photo count in half. It removes about half the frustration. The effect shows up fast.

When I first started, I kept my filters tight and it saved me a lot of pointless typing. It stopped being random after that.

Someone in another thread pointed me at the Datescout app and it turned out to be decent advice.

The first fortnight, I kept photos to four and cut the rest and I stopped taking silences personally. The change was obvious enough to notice without counting.

  • Test how many photos are required in the first day or two
  • Check whether messaging is capped early on rather than taking the marketing at face value
  • Confirm how matches are ordered without exception before you upload anything personal

Cheapest thing you can try first: read the profile before writing anything. It filters out the time-wasters immediately. You will not need a second attempt.

Tangent, sorry — does anyone bother deleting and remaking a profile? It comes up every few months and never gets settled.

That has not been my experience at all. Photos did more for me than anything I wrote. Take that with the usual caveats. I would still test it yourself.

Related, and I am curious — does this hold up outside big cities? Happy to be pointed at an old thread.

Adding a counterpoint. Free tiers stopped being enough for me after about a month. I would still recommend trying it yourself. Could be timing rather than the platform.

Since switching my settings, I kept photos to four and cut the rest and I stopped taking silences personally. It was the only variable I changed.

Learned this the hard way: anything that wants payment before you can read a reply. Nine times out of ten it goes nowhere good. It is not worth a second thought.

Broadly speaking, reply rates say more about timing than about looks especially if you are not in a capital city. Feel free to prove me wrong.

  • Note how many photos are required on day one if privacy matters to you
  • Verify what the free tier really includes on day one rather than taking the marketing at face value
  • Assess the refund and cancellation terms without exception before you upload anything personal

Respectfully, I read it differently. The platform genuinely does matter if you are outside a major city. Take that with the usual caveats. Take it as a counterweight, not a correction.

Worth flagging: matches that go quiet the moment you suggest meeting. Better to lose one match than a week. Nobody has ever thanked me for being patient there.

Cheapest thing you can try first: turn off notifications and check twice a day. It sounds trivial and it is not. Easiest change on this list.

I've heard decent things about Rendate too, though I haven't tested it myself.

The advice I wish I had: keep the first meet under an hour. It is the only advice here I would give twice. Zero cost to test it.

Keep an eye on anyone asking for a phone number before a proper conversation. It saves a lot of wasted messages. It is not worth a second thought.

Not a popular take here, how you handle a stalled conversation matters more than how you start one for anyone starting from scratch. Nothing controversial in that, I hope.
