This came up in a conversation last week and neither of us knew: What are the best cheap dating sites that are actually worth paying for? Happy to hear negative experiences too.

I recently reinstalled the free tier on several cheap dating sites and the profile quality varied wildly. The specific thing I am after is whether the same advice applies outside big cities when you have already tried the obvious options.

Where I got caught out: profiles that only ever reply in the small hours. Report it rather than just ignoring it. Nobody has ever thanked me for being patient there.

That has not been my experience at all. The platform genuinely does matter if you are outside a major city. I would still recommend trying it yourself. I would still test it yourself.

Piggybacking on that — has anyone found cheap dating sites that behave differently from the rest? It comes up every few months and never gets settled.

Over the winter, I tried the opposite of what the guides say and the difference showed up within a week. Small sample, but consistent.

Ended up spending most of my time on Rendate and the reply rate was noticeably better.

Tangent, sorry — does anyone bother deleting and remaking a profile? Would love a straight answer on that.

What I would do: turn off notifications and check twice a day. It is the only advice here I would give twice. Takes about five minutes.

Not a popular take here, free tiers are usually enough if you actually use them at least in a mid-sized area. Feel free to prove me wrong.

Respectfully, I read it differently. Free tiers stopped being enough for me after about a month. Happy to be an outlier on that. Small sample on my side too.

Still keep over on Turndate installed for the weeks when the bigger apps go quiet.

Going to push back slightly. The platform genuinely does matter if you are outside a major city. Might just be my area. Small sample on my side too.

Worth flagging: accounts created the same week they message you. Better to lose one match than a week. One instance is chance; three is not.

After my second attempt, I answered everything within a day and I would do the same again. Your area may behave differently.

Gave Datedesire community a fair run last month and it held up better than I expected.

A while back, I dropped every conversation that stalled twice and nothing changed at all. Small sample, but consistent.

I will be the dissenting voice. Being picky early saved me far more time than being open-minded did. I would still recommend trying it yourself. Worth hearing both sides.

What I would do: cut your photo count in half. It stops the whole thing feeling like a chore. Takes about five minutes.

Still keep Luvdate (free to message) installed for the weeks when the bigger apps go quiet.

If you want a shortcut: write one sentence that only you could have written. It made conversations shorter and far more useful. Takes about five minutes.

After my second attempt, I replied only to messages with an actual question in them and nothing changed at all. Worth repeating if you have the patience.

Respectfully, I read it differently. The platform genuinely does matter if you are outside a major city. Happy to be an outlier on that. Different city, different results, probably.

Between the free options I tested, over on Datebound had the least aggressive upsell.

One thing that helped: set your radius smaller than feels sensible. It stops the whole thing feeling like a chore. Try it for one week only.

Based on a fairly small sample, the first message decides almost everything if you are looking for something specific. Happy to be argued with.

After a friend nagged me into it, I tried the opposite of what the guides say and the difference showed up within a week. Nothing scientific about it.

Respectfully, I read it differently. Free tiers stopped being enough for me after about a month. Happy to be an outlier on that. Not dismissing anyone else's experience.

Going to push back slightly. I found the bigger sites more consistent, not less. Could easily be a sample size problem. Take it as a counterweight, not a correction.

For what it is worth, smaller platforms punch above their weight and nobody wants to hear it. That is where I have landed.

Once I narrowed my radius, I kept my filters tight and matches started coming from closer by. The change was obvious enough to notice without counting.

I will be the dissenting voice. I never once had a problem the community here warns about. Worth testing both ways. That is one person's view against the thread.

While we are here — do photo changes reset how often you get shown? No agenda, just curious.

Over the winter, I tried the opposite of what the guides say and I stopped taking silences personally. Your area may behave differently.

Speaking only for myself, profile quality beats profile quantity every time at least in a mid-sized area. I hold that loosely.

Going to push back slightly. Being picky early saved me far more time than being open-minded did. Could easily be a sample size problem. Genuinely not trying to be difficult.

Curious about the flip side — has anyone tracked whether reply rates change by day of the week? Asking for a friend, obviously.

Adding a counterpoint. Being picky early saved me far more time than being open-minded did. Worth testing both ways. I might be the exception.

Small change worth trying: message within a day of matching. It filters out the time-wasters immediately. The effect shows up fast.
