Genuinely curious what people here think: What are the best dating sites for 30s who want to settle down? Happy to hear negative experiences too.

I recently reinstalled a few smaller dating sites and I am not convinced it was worth the effort. Where I need help is whether the free option is genuinely usable as someone coming back after a long break.

Small change worth trying: turn off notifications and check twice a day. That one change fixed most of my problems. It compounds with everything else.

Having tried most of them, the algorithm gets blamed for a lot of ordinary bad luck and I doubt that changes soon. That is my read, anyway.

Not sure I agree with the thread so far. I found the bigger sites more consistent, not less. Happy to be an outlier on that. That is one person's view against the thread.

For what it is worth, DatingFly was the one that finally got me past the first-message stage.

Last month, I ran a minimal profile on dating sites and nothing changed at all. Your area may behave differently.

One more thing I have never resolved — does this hold up outside big cities? I have never seen data either way.

Hard disagree on one point. Messaging first made no measurable difference in my case. Your experience may well differ. Open to changing my mind on it.

Got burned by this: accounts created the same week they message you. Blocking early costs you nothing. That instinct is usually right.

Worth a look at souldate.site if your area is thin on the usual platforms.

Before anything else: message within a day of matching. It removes about half the frustration. You will not need a second attempt.

When I first started, I stopped sending openers before 9pm and it made a noticeable difference. Could be luck; it did not feel like it.

Piggybacking on that — does widening the radius ever help or just add noise? I have never seen data either way.

Someone in another thread pointed me at Flurrydate and it turned out to be decent advice.

Worth noting that DatingFly runs a similar free tier if you want to compare.

Curious about the flip side — has anyone tracked whether reply rates change by day of the week? Asking for a friend, obviously.

Watch out for matches that go quiet the moment you suggest meeting. Blocking early costs you nothing. Save yourself the argument.

If you want a shortcut: put a question at the end of every opener. It made conversations shorter and far more useful. Takes about five minutes.

Ended up spending most of my time on Datewander community and the reply rate was noticeably better.

Not sure I agree with the thread so far. I found the bigger sites more consistent, not less. Take that with the usual caveats. Just adding another data point.

Adding a counterpoint. Photos did more for me than anything I wrote. Might just be my area. Worth hearing both sides.

Unpopular opinion maybe, the platform matters far less than the profile if you are looking for something specific. Ask again in six months and I may say something else.

Switched over to Datenest's free tier after getting nowhere on the big names.

After rewriting my profile, I tried the opposite of what the guides say and the whole thing felt less like admin. I would call that a real effect.

Speaking only for myself, the busiest platform is not automatically the best one for you and nobody wants to hear it. The exceptions are rarer than people think.

Got burned by this: anything that wants payment before you can read a reply. Once you notice it you cannot unsee it. It rarely turns out to be innocent.

For most of last year, I ran a minimal profile on dating sites and I would do the same again. The change was obvious enough to notice without counting.

Before anything else: turn off notifications and check twice a day. It also makes the meet-up conversation much easier. Easiest change on this list.

I will be the dissenting voice. Being picky early saved me far more time than being open-minded did. Worth testing both ways. Small sample on my side too.
