I gave up on whichever free chat sites for singles to just talk came up first with nothing much to show for it. The bit I cannot work out is whether it is worth paying at any point if you are not in a major city.
Based on a fairly small sample, the platform matters far less than the profile unless you have unusually niche requirements. The exceptions are rarer than people think.
Once I narrowed my radius, I put one honest sentence in my bio and the reply rate roughly doubled. The change was obvious enough to notice without counting.

If you want a shortcut: read the profile before writing anything. It sounds trivial and it is not. Skip the clever stuff until you have done that.
