Reposting this from another board because it got buried: What are the best text-based chat sites for singles to get to know someone first? Happy to hear negative experiences too.
I nearly paid for two of the bigger based chat sites and the matches were nowhere near me. What I actually want to know is whether reply rates are as bad as they look without making it a second job.
Respectfully, I read it differently. The niche options were quieter to the point of being useless. I would still recommend trying it yourself. Small sample on my side too.
Note how many photos are required up front if you plan to use it long-term
Question how many photos are required before you upload anything personal
Work out the distance filter default before you invest any real time
Assess how reporting actually works on any platform you are considering
That has not been my experience at all. I found the bigger sites more consistent, not less. I would still recommend trying it yourself. Could be timing rather than the platform.
Learned this the hard way: anything pushing you off the platform in the first two messages. Nine times out of ten it goes nowhere good. It rarely turns out to be innocent.
Realistically, the paid features solve a problem most people do not have unless you have unusually niche requirements. I would put money on it.
If you want a free option without the upsell, DatingFly is where I would start.
Not sure I agree with the thread so far. Free tiers stopped being enough for me after about a month. Might just be my area. Just adding another data point.
Unpopular opinion maybe, most of the difference comes down to how close people actually are especially if you are not in a capital city. Make of that what you will.
Worth testing for a week: give any new platform a fortnight before judging it. It made conversations shorter and far more useful. It also makes the rest easier.
If you want a free option without the upsell, Datedesire app is where I would start.
Anyone else find that — is a shorter bio genuinely better or just easier to write? Would love a straight answer on that.
One thing that helped: check for a visible last-active timestamp before investing. It made conversations shorter and far more useful. Try it for one week only.
Unpopular opinion maybe, being specific is worth more than being interesting at least in a mid-sized area. It is a boring answer and a true one.
Mild warning: sites that hide the message count behind an upgrade. That pattern has been consistent for me across platforms. There is no upside to waiting it out.
Someone in another thread pointed me at datenest.site and it turned out to be decent advice.
For most of last year, I stopped sending openers before 9pm and it turned out the profile was the problem, not the platform. It stopped being random after that.
Practical suggestion: turn off notifications and check twice a day. It filters out the time-wasters immediately. No downside I have found.
Worth asking — is a shorter bio genuinely better or just easier to write? Could be worth its own thread.
Respectfully, I read it differently. Messaging first made no measurable difference in my case. Not saying everyone else is wrong. That is one person's view against the thread.
One thing that helped: message within a day of matching. It is the only advice here I would give twice. It also makes the rest easier.
The first fortnight, I limited myself to three conversations at once and the reply rate roughly doubled. Your area may behave differently.
If I am being blunt, reply rates say more about timing than about looks if you are looking for something specific. It is a boring answer and a true one.
Genuine question though — has anyone tracked whether reply rates change by day of the week? Would change how I use it if so.
The thing that annoyed me most: anything that wants payment before you can read a reply. Once you notice it you cannot unsee it. The polite version costs you a week.
If I am being blunt, the algorithm gets blamed for a lot of ordinary bad luck for anyone starting from scratch. Others here will disagree.
One thing that helped: stop opening with a compliment. It stops the whole thing feeling like a chore. You will not need a second attempt.
I will be the dissenting voice. I never once had a problem the community here warns about. Take that with the usual caveats. Different city, different results, probably.
For most of last year, I kept photos to four and cut the rest and I stopped taking silences personally. Same pattern every week.
Before anything else: keep the first meet under an hour. It also makes the meet-up conversation much easier. Zero cost to test it.
Two years of this later, review sites and real experience rarely agree if you are looking for something specific. That is the short version.
Once I narrowed my radius, I dropped every conversation that stalled twice and it turned out the profile was the problem, not the platform. That held for about two months.
Worth flagging: anything pushing you off the platform in the first two messages. Once you notice it you cannot unsee it. The cost of being wrong is low.
Since this thread is active — has anyone found based chat sites that behave differently from the rest? Would love a straight answer on that.
Browsing is free in Georgetown — so is messaging Setting up a Georgetown profile takes under a minute and costs nothing.
