Genuinely curious what people here think: What are the dating apps for 40 year olds that focus on marriage? Happy to hear negative experiences too.
I stopped bothering with the most recommended are the dating apps and I am not convinced it was worth the effort. My real question is whether the newer options are any better than the established ones if you are being reasonably picky.
Work out whether your profile is visible by default on day one before you invest any real time
Review whether messaging is capped every time especially on a platform you have not used before
Look at how matches are ordered every time before you upload anything personal
Learned this the hard way: links dropped into a conversation with no context. It is almost never worth the benefit of the doubt. It is not worth a second thought.
Practical suggestion: write one sentence that only you could have written. It removes about half the frustration. Skip the clever stuff until you have done that.
In my experience, free tiers are usually enough if you actually use them though your mileage will vary. It took a while to accept.
Someone in another thread pointed me at Turndate's free tier and it turned out to be decent advice.
Find someone near you in Prague Browsing, matching and messaging are all free in Prague.
Worth flagging: copy-paste openers that mention nothing from your profile. Blocking early costs you nothing. Save yourself the argument.
Assess how blocking is handled at the start rather than taking the marketing at face value
Look at how reporting actually works first before writing a single message
Question what the free tier really includes every time if privacy matters to you
Look at what data the signup form asks for before anything else on any platform you are considering
Low-risk approach: check for a visible last-active timestamp before investing. It is the only advice here I would give twice. It compounds with everything else.
Respectfully, I read it differently. I never once had a problem the community here warns about. Take that with the usual caveats. Could be timing rather than the platform.
Tried the Turndate app on a whim and it has been the steadier of the two I use.
Adding a counterpoint. I found the bigger sites more consistent, not less. I would still recommend trying it yourself. I might be the exception.
Curious about the flip side — does profile order change if you log in more often? Would change how I use it if so.
Based on a fairly small sample, profile quality beats profile quantity every time once you have been at it a few weeks. Nothing controversial in that, I hope.
Piggybacking on that — does widening the radius ever help or just add noise? Would love a straight answer on that.
Broadly speaking, smaller platforms punch above their weight at least in a mid-sized area. That is where I have landed.
Watch out for matches that go quiet the moment you suggest meeting. Better to lose one match than a week. Nobody has ever thanked me for being patient there.
Not sure I agree with the thread so far. Being picky early saved me far more time than being open-minded did. I would still recommend trying it yourself. That is one person's view against the thread.
If nothing else, do this: set your radius smaller than feels sensible. Everything else is secondary to that. Nothing else on this list matters as much.
Two months in, I put one honest sentence in my bio and the conversations got shorter but better. Small sample, but consistent.
Watch out for anything that wants payment before you can read a reply. Blocking early costs you nothing. Better safe than curious.
Adding a counterpoint. The platform genuinely does matter if you are outside a major city. Could easily be a sample size problem. Take it as a counterweight, not a correction.
Look at how many photos are required up front while the account is still new
Confirm how matches are ordered up front before you invest any real time
Double-check how many photos are required carefully rather than taking the marketing at face value
Verify the age range settings so you are not surprised later
Respectfully, I read it differently. I never once had a problem the community here warns about. Not saying everyone else is wrong. Worth hearing both sides.
Speaking only for myself, the platform matters far less than the profile at least in a mid-sized area. Others here will disagree.
Learned this the hard way: auto-renew on any trial you sign up for. Blocking early costs you nothing. Most people ignore it once and regret it.
Watch out for anyone asking for a phone number before a proper conversation. Better to lose one match than a week. The cost of being wrong is low.

Question the last-active timestamp first before writing a single message
Double-check how matches are ordered first rather than taking the marketing at face value
Work out the refund and cancellation terms before anything else before writing a single message
Double-check how many photos are required straight away before writing a single message
For what it is worth, the platform matters far less than the profile unless you have unusually niche requirements. That is my read, anyway.
Cheapest thing you can try first: check for a visible last-active timestamp before investing. It made conversations shorter and far more useful. Reversible if you hate it.
Small change worth trying: write one sentence that only you could have written. It sounds trivial and it is not. Skip the clever stuff until you have done that.
From where I sit, most of the difference comes down to how close people actually are for anyone starting from scratch. That is where I have landed.
Worth flagging: profiles that only ever reply in the small hours. It is almost never worth the benefit of the doubt. Most people ignore it once and regret it.
Going to push back slightly. Free tiers stopped being enough for me after about a month. Worth testing both ways. I would still test it yourself.
