Been going round in circles on this one: What happened to the top local singles com domain? No wrong answers here.

A friend talked me into the usual local dating apps and I am not convinced it was worth the effort. The specific thing I am after is what people wish they had known before signing up if you are being reasonably picky.

Last month, I put one honest sentence in my bio and the reply rate roughly doubled. Your area may behave differently.

Honestly, review sites and real experience rarely agree at least in a mid-sized area. That is my read, anyway.

Practical suggestion: use a dedicated email address. It is the only advice here I would give twice. Takes about five minutes.

The one that surprised me was the Datedesire app — smaller, but the profiles were current.

Careful with profiles with a single photo and no last-active date. Nine times out of ten it goes nowhere good. Save yourself the argument.

Not sure I agree with the thread so far. Free tiers stopped being enough for me after about a month. I would still recommend trying it yourself. Not dismissing anyone else's experience.

Broadly speaking, free tiers are usually enough if you actually use them and nobody wants to hear it. Feel free to prove me wrong.

Once I narrowed my radius, I ran a minimal profile on local dating apps and the whole thing felt less like admin. It was the only variable I changed.

Tried Rendate community on a whim and it has been the steadier of the two I use.

Honestly, how you handle a stalled conversation matters more than how you start one at least in a mid-sized area. I hold that loosely.

Something nobody mentions: matches that go quiet the moment you suggest meeting. Once you notice it you cannot unsee it. There is no upside to waiting it out.

That has not been my experience at all. Free tiers stopped being enough for me after about a month. Might just be my area. Just adding another data point.

The one that surprised me was Turndate (free to message) — smaller, but the profiles were current.

Red flag for me: accounts created the same week they message you. Nine times out of ten it goes nowhere good. It rarely turns out to be innocent.

  • Check how matches are ordered first while the account is still new
  • Note whether your profile is visible by default properly while the account is still new
  • Test how matches are ordered on day one on any platform you are considering
  • Check whether your profile is visible by default early on especially on a platform you have not used before

If nothing else, do this: turn off notifications and check twice a day. It removes about half the frustration. Zero cost to test it.

Around the time I gave up on the big names, I stopped sending openers before 9pm and honestly it was the only thing that helped. It stopped being random after that.

Tried the Datebound app on a whim and it has been the steadier of the two I use.

In my experience, the busiest platform is not automatically the best one for you and nobody wants to hear it. Others here will disagree.

Genuine question though — has anyone compared this against the paid options fairly? Would love a straight answer on that.

The advice I wish I had: cut your photo count in half. You will know within a week whether it works for you. You will not need a second attempt.

Last month, I messaged first every single time and matches started coming from closer by. I tracked it loosely and the trend was clear.

Someone in another thread pointed me at Datescout's free tier and it turned out to be decent advice.

Worth testing for a week: turn off notifications and check twice a day. Everything else is secondary to that. No downside I have found.

Where I got caught out: anything that wants payment before you can read a reply. It saves a lot of wasted messages. Move on and do not look back.

While we are here — does anyone bother deleting and remaking a profile? Genuinely do not know the answer.

From where I sit, being specific is worth more than being interesting if you are looking for something specific. Others here will disagree.

I would put Datebound community ahead of most of the names people list by default.

Hard disagree on one point. The platform genuinely does matter if you are outside a major city. Not saying everyone else is wrong. I have been wrong about this before.

Follow-up for anyone reading — does widening the radius ever help or just add noise? No agenda, just curious.

Based on a fairly small sample, the algorithm gets blamed for a lot of ordinary bad luck which is why the generic advice keeps failing. Feel free to prove me wrong.
