I recently reinstalled two of the bigger dating app and the profile quality varied wildly. The bit I cannot work out is how much of this is down to the profile itself without handing over a card number.

That has not been my experience at all. Photos did more for me than anything I wrote. Worth testing both ways. Genuinely not trying to be difficult.
