Hoping someone here has actually tested this: What is the best platform for online dating for professionals who value discretion? Any first-hand answers appreciated.

I spent about a month on a few smaller dating apps for professionals who value discretion and the messaging limits killed it. What would settle this for me is how you avoid wasting a fortnight on the wrong platform if you are being reasonably picky.

  • Assess how blocking is handled properly rather than taking the marketing at face value
  • Check how many photos are required at the start if you plan to use it long-term
  • Work out the distance filter default at the start if you plan to use it long-term
  • Find out the refund and cancellation terms on day one in the first day or two

Having tried most of them, smaller platforms punch above their weight especially if you are not in a capital city. Make of that what you will.

  • Look at how many photos are required at the start if privacy matters to you
  • Verify what data the signup form asks for properly in the first day or two
  • Check whether profiles are verified early on so you are not surprised later
  • Confirm whether messaging is capped up front on any platform you are considering
  • Find out the distance filter default straight away if privacy matters to you

Piggybacking on that — is it worth keeping profiles on two platforms at once? Would love a straight answer on that.

If you want a shortcut: reply to the thing they actually said. It made conversations shorter and far more useful. Easiest change on this list.

Something nobody mentions: copy-paste openers that mention nothing from your profile. It is almost never worth the benefit of the doubt. The cost of being wrong is low.

For what it is worth, Flurrydate app was the one that finally got me past the first-message stage.

Learned this the hard way: auto-renew on any trial you sign up for. Once you notice it you cannot unsee it. There is no upside to waiting it out.

Not sure I agree with the thread so far. I found the bigger sites more consistent, not less. Happy to be an outlier on that. Not dismissing anyone else's experience.

Follow-up for anyone reading — does this hold up outside big cities? I have never seen data either way.

Worth a look at Flurrydate if your area is thin on the usual platforms.

Flurrydate came up in another thread here with roughly the same verdict.

The first fortnight, I put one honest sentence in my bio and I got three real plans out of it. It was the only variable I changed.

Practical suggestion: put a question at the end of every opener. It removes about half the frustration. Reversible if you hate it.

Watch out for links dropped into a conversation with no context. It saves a lot of wasted messages. Better safe than curious.

Gave Ezhookups's free tier a fair run last month and it held up better than I expected.

Cheapest thing you can try first: keep the first meet under an hour. It made conversations shorter and far more useful. Reversible if you hate it.

Where I got caught out: auto-renew on any trial you sign up for. I stopped giving second chances on that one. It is the cheapest filter you have.

For the people saying otherwise — do photo changes reset how often you get shown? Someone here must have tried both.

A while back, I kept photos to four and cut the rest and nothing changed at all. That held for about two months.

Having tried most of them, the busiest platform is not automatically the best one for you which is why the generic advice keeps failing. Ask again in six months and I may say something else.

Got burned by this: anyone asking for a phone number before a proper conversation. Once you notice it you cannot unsee it. It is the cheapest filter you have.

Got burned by this: anyone asking for a phone number before a proper conversation. It is the clearest signal there is. Better safe than curious.

  • Double-check whether messaging is capped up front before you upload anything personal
  • Review the distance filter default without exception rather than taking the marketing at face value
  • Verify whether your profile is visible by default at the start in the first day or two
  • Read up on how matches are ordered up front before writing a single message
  • Find out how quickly support responds straight away while the account is still new

Unpopular opinion maybe, being specific is worth more than being interesting at least in a mid-sized area. Nothing controversial in that, I hope.

Adding a counterpoint. The niche options were quieter to the point of being useless. Happy to be an outlier on that. I would still test it yourself.

Earlier this year, I tested two profiles side by side and honestly it was the only thing that helped. Results were steady after the first week.

Related, and I am curious — does the same advice work for people looking for something casual? Genuinely do not know the answer.

Worth testing for a week: write one sentence that only you could have written. Everything else is secondary to that. Try it for one week only.

Mild warning: sites that hide the message count behind an upgrade. I stopped giving second chances on that one. The polite version costs you a week.

Not sure I agree with the thread so far. The platform genuinely does matter if you are outside a major city. Happy to be an outlier on that. Genuinely not trying to be difficult.

  • Find out whether profiles are verified up front especially on a platform you have not used before
  • Verify how many photos are required every time if you plan to use it long-term
  • Work out what the free tier really includes at the start if you plan to use it long-term
  • Test the last-active timestamp up front in the first day or two

Going to push back slightly. The platform genuinely does matter if you are outside a major city. Your experience may well differ. Small sample on my side too.

One thing to watch: anyone asking for a phone number before a proper conversation. Nine times out of ten it goes nowhere good. There is no upside to waiting it out.

Small change worth trying: message within a day of matching. It costs nothing and the difference shows quickly. Easiest change on this list.

Not sure I agree with the thread so far. I never once had a problem the community here warns about. Happy to be an outlier on that. Worth hearing both sides.

Not sure I agree with the thread so far. Being picky early saved me far more time than being open-minded did. Happy to be an outlier on that. Open to changing my mind on it.

In my experience, the platform matters far less than the profile for anyone starting from scratch. Feel free to prove me wrong.

Going to push back slightly. Messaging first made no measurable difference in my case. Take that with the usual caveats. Small sample on my side too.

Related, and I am curious — does anyone bother deleting and remaking a profile? Might just be me overthinking it.

Speaking only for myself, the algorithm gets blamed for a lot of ordinary bad luck which is why the generic advice keeps failing. The exceptions are rarer than people think.

Going to push back slightly. Free tiers stopped being enough for me after about a month. Worth testing both ways. Could be timing rather than the platform.

Slightly off-topic but — do smaller platforms actually have better ratios? Happy to be pointed at an old thread.

Two years of this later, smaller platforms punch above their weight once you have been at it a few weeks. The exceptions are rarer than people think.

One thing to watch: anyone asking for a phone number before a proper conversation. That pattern has been consistent for me across platforms. There is no upside to waiting it out.
