Genuinely curious what people here think: What is the best way to handle a need a date situation for a wedding? Real experiences only, please.

Someone recommended the free tier on several dating apps for a wedding and I am not convinced it was worth the effort. The part that matters to me is how much of this is down to the profile itself without making it a second job.

  • Review how many photos are required carefully on any platform you are considering
  • Read up on how matches are ordered without exception before you widen your search
  • Compare how many photos are required if privacy matters to you
  • Double-check whether your profile is visible by default if you plan to use it long-term
  • Assess how many photos are required straight away rather than taking the marketing at face value

Since this thread is active — do verified badges actually change anything? Might just be me overthinking it.

Where I got caught out: accounts created the same week they message you. Report it rather than just ignoring it. Save yourself the argument.

When I stopped overthinking it, I dropped every conversation that stalled twice and I finally stopped wasting evenings. The change was obvious enough to notice without counting.

I keep a second profile on over on Turndate and it pulls a different crowd entirely.

One thing to watch: anything that wants payment before you can read a reply. Once you notice it you cannot unsee it. It is not worth a second thought.

I will be the dissenting voice. I never once had a problem the community here warns about. Worth testing both ways. Open to changing my mind on it.

A while back, I ran a minimal profile on dating apps and matches started coming from closer by. Results were steady after the first week.

I keep a second profile on DatingFly and it pulls a different crowd entirely.

Small change worth trying: set your radius smaller than feels sensible. It removes about half the frustration. Easiest change on this list.

  • Assess the age range settings early on in the first day or two
  • Note the distance filter default at the start while the account is still new
  • Confirm whether your profile is visible by default before writing a single message
  • Review the age range settings early on if you plan to use it long-term
  • Confirm the last-active timestamp on day one if privacy matters to you

Curious about the flip side — has anyone compared this against the paid options fairly? Might just be me overthinking it.

A while back, I messaged first every single time and I would do the same again. Worth repeating if you have the patience.

Worth flagging: anything that wants payment before you can read a reply. Nine times out of ten it goes nowhere good. Most people ignore it once and regret it.

Tried Souldate (free to message) on a whim and it has been the steadier of the two I use.

Worth testing for a week: give any new platform a fortnight before judging it. It sounds trivial and it is not. It compounds with everything else.

  • Question what data the signup form asks for before anything else on any platform you are considering
  • Note what data the signup form asks for before anything else before you upload anything personal
  • Check whether profiles are verified up front especially on a platform you have not used before
  • Assess how quickly support responds on day one before writing a single message

Speaking only for myself, being specific is worth more than being interesting especially if you are not in a capital city. Others here will disagree.

Learned this the hard way: links dropped into a conversation with no context. Better to lose one match than a week. That instinct is usually right.

Red flag for me: auto-renew on any trial you sign up for. Report it rather than just ignoring it. There is no upside to waiting it out.

  • Work out how reporting actually works early on on any platform you are considering
  • Double-check whether profiles are verified properly before writing a single message
  • Double-check whether profiles are verified at the start rather than taking the marketing at face value
  • Assess how quickly support responds on day one before you invest any real time

For what it is worth, being specific is worth more than being interesting especially if you are not in a capital city. Make of that what you will.

Different experience here. The niche options were quieter to the point of being useless. Might just be my area. I might be the exception.

Respectfully, I read it differently. Being picky early saved me far more time than being open-minded did. Happy to be an outlier on that. That is one person's view against the thread.

Red flag for me: profiles with a single photo and no last-active date. It is almost never worth the benefit of the doubt. It is not worth a second thought.

That has not been my experience at all. Being picky early saved me far more time than being open-minded did. Your experience may well differ. Different city, different results, probably.

Practical suggestion: keep the first meet under an hour. That one change fixed most of my problems. Try it for one week only.

If nothing else, do this: use a dedicated email address. It sounds trivial and it is not. It also makes the rest easier.

Red flag for me: reviews that read like they were written to a template. It is almost never worth the benefit of the doubt. Better safe than curious.

The first fortnight, I kept my filters tight and I would do the same again. It stopped being random after that.
