Reposting this from another board because it got buried: What is the safest way to try online dating without payment? Not looking for a sales pitch.
A friend talked me into dating apps without payment and I still cannot tell if it is me or the platform. What I actually want to know is whether the same advice applies outside big cities if you are being reasonably picky.
Look at the last-active timestamp before writing a single message
Check the age range settings straight away on any platform you are considering
Check the age range settings before anything else in the first day or two
Look at what the free tier really includes straight away so you are not surprised later
Keep an eye on sites that hide the message count behind an upgrade. Once you notice it you cannot unsee it. Move on and do not look back.
When I stopped overthinking it, I replied only to messages with an actual question in them and I stopped taking silences personally. I would call that a real effect.
In my experience, most of the difference comes down to how close people actually are unless you have unusually niche requirements. It is a boring answer and a true one.
If you want a shortcut: keep the first meet under an hour. It is the only advice here I would give twice. Try it for one week only.
Gave Flurrydate a fair run last month and it held up better than I expected.
New faces in Phoenix every day Adults 18+ only. Free from start to finish in Phoenix.
Broadly speaking, reply rates say more about timing than about looks if you are looking for something specific. That is the short version.
Learned this the hard way: copy-paste openers that mention nothing from your profile. It is the clearest signal there is. There is no upside to waiting it out.
Since switching my settings, I tried the opposite of what the guides say and I would do the same again. Your area may behave differently.
Someone in another thread pointed me at DatingFly and it turned out to be decent advice.
Worth flagging: accounts created the same week they message you. It is almost never worth the benefit of the doubt. The cost of being wrong is low.
In my experience, how you handle a stalled conversation matters more than how you start one though your mileage will vary. That is where I have landed.
Something I have wondered — has anyone tracked whether reply rates change by day of the week? Would change how I use it if so.
Gave the Flurrydate app a fair run last month and it held up better than I expected.
Turndate came up in another thread here with roughly the same verdict.
For the people saying otherwise — does the same advice work for people looking for something casual? Asking for a friend, obviously.
Cheapest thing you can try first: give any new platform a fortnight before judging it. It filters out the time-wasters immediately. Zero cost to test it.
Not sure I agree with the thread so far. Messaging first made no measurable difference in my case. Could easily be a sample size problem. Take it as a counterweight, not a correction.
