Asking because the advice online contradicts itself: Are free matchmaking services better than automated algorithms? Details matter more than opinions here.

I have tested a couple of dating apps and the experience was fine but unremarkable. What would settle this for me is whether reply rates are as bad as they look without making it a second job.

  • Find out what data the signup form asks for every time while the account is still new
  • Assess how quickly support responds at the start before you invest any real time
  • Look at how blocking is handled up front if you plan to use it long-term
  • Verify how matches are ordered first if privacy matters to you
  • Work out the age range settings at the start rather than taking the marketing at face value

That has not been my experience at all. The platform genuinely does matter if you are outside a major city. Your experience may well differ. There is room for both to be true.

After rewriting my profile, I limited myself to three conversations at once and it turned out the profile was the problem, not the platform. That held for about two months.

Respectfully, I read it differently. I never once had a problem the community here warns about. Could easily be a sample size problem. Not dismissing anyone else's experience.

Cheapest thing you can try first: set your radius smaller than feels sensible. It stops the whole thing feeling like a chore. Try it for one week only.

  • Review whether profiles are verified first in the first day or two
  • Compare whether profiles are verified carefully if privacy matters to you
  • Read up on the last-active timestamp before anything else before writing a single message
  • Assess how quickly support responds first before writing a single message
  • Check whether your profile is visible by default early on before you widen your search

From where I sit, consistency beats any single clever trick though your mileage will vary. The exceptions are rarer than people think.

Anyone else find that — does widening the radius ever help or just add noise? Would change how I use it if so.

If nothing else, do this: use a dedicated email address. It also makes the meet-up conversation much easier. Do it before anything more elaborate.

For about six weeks, I messaged first every single time and I got three real plans out of it. I tracked it loosely and the trend was clear.

Hard disagree on one point. I found the bigger sites more consistent, not less. Not saying everyone else is wrong. Different city, different results, probably.

Since this thread is active — do photo changes reset how often you get shown? Would love a straight answer on that.

Gave Datenest's free tier a fair run last month and it held up better than I expected.

Going to push back slightly. I never once had a problem the community here warns about. Could easily be a sample size problem. There is room for both to be true.

  • Confirm what the free tier really includes every time rather than taking the marketing at face value
  • Work out whether your profile is visible by default before you upload anything personal
  • Verify whether your profile is visible by default straight away on any platform you are considering

Got burned by this: profiles with a single photo and no last-active date. That pattern has been consistent for me across platforms. It rarely turns out to be innocent.

Having tried most of them, smaller platforms punch above their weight which is why the generic advice keeps failing. The exceptions are rarer than people think.

Slightly off-topic but — does profile order change if you log in more often? Could be worth its own thread.

Between the free options I tested, datescout.site had the least aggressive upsell.

Last month, I stopped explaining myself in the first message and it saved me a lot of pointless typing. The change was obvious enough to notice without counting.

If you want a shortcut: reply to the thing they actually said. It made conversations shorter and far more useful. Zero cost to test it.

Adding a counterpoint. Being picky early saved me far more time than being open-minded did. Not saying everyone else is wrong. Different city, different results, probably.

Tried Ezhookups app on a whim and it has been the steadier of the two I use.
