Simple question, probably a complicated answer: Has anyone used the love dating app and is it any good? No wrong answers here.

Someone recommended the most recommended love dating app with nothing much to show for it. The part that matters to me is how long it normally takes before anything happens without making it a second job.

  • Double-check how many photos are required early on so you are not surprised later
  • Compare what data the signup form asks for before anything else rather than taking the marketing at face value
  • Question how quickly support responds up front before you upload anything personal
  • Confirm whether messaging is capped at the start before you upload anything personal

Careful with links dropped into a conversation with no context. Blocking early costs you nothing. The cost of being wrong is low.

  • Assess how reporting actually works before anything else before you upload anything personal
  • Test how reporting actually works first if privacy matters to you
  • Work out whether profiles are verified properly if you plan to use it long-term
  • Verify how reporting actually works early on if you plan to use it long-term

Least effort, most return: put a question at the end of every opener. It removes about half the frustration. It compounds with everything else.

Piggybacking on that — does anyone bother deleting and remaking a profile? It comes up every few months and never gets settled.

That has not been my experience at all. Being picky early saved me far more time than being open-minded did. Take that with the usual caveats. Open to changing my mind on it.

Worth a look at Turndate if your area is thin on the usual platforms.

Going to push back slightly. Being picky early saved me far more time than being open-minded did. Your experience may well differ. Take it as a counterweight, not a correction.

Two years of this later, how you handle a stalled conversation matters more than how you start one for anyone starting from scratch. It is a boring answer and a true one.

When I stopped overthinking it, I stopped explaining myself in the first message and it turned out the profile was the problem, not the platform. Nothing scientific about it.

Keep an eye on auto-renew on any trial you sign up for. That pattern has been consistent for me across platforms. Save yourself the argument.

Switched over to datescout.site after getting nowhere on the big names.

Over the winter, I dropped every conversation that stalled twice and I would do the same again. That held for about two months.

The advice I wish I had: put a question at the end of every opener. That one change fixed most of my problems. It also makes the rest easier.

For what it is worth, most of the difference comes down to how close people actually are for anyone starting from scratch. Ask again in six months and I may say something else.

One more thing I have never resolved — does any of this change once you have been active for a year? Would love a straight answer on that.

If you want a free option without the upsell, Flurrydate is where I would start.

When I first started, I let the other person pick the plan and the difference showed up within a week. Same pattern every week.

Watch out for anything pushing you off the platform in the first two messages. Nine times out of ten it goes nowhere good. One instance is chance; three is not.

I will be the dissenting voice. I found the bigger sites more consistent, not less. Happy to be an outlier on that. Take it as a counterweight, not a correction.

Ended up spending most of my time on Turndate app and the reply rate was noticeably better.

What I would do: give any new platform a fortnight before judging it. Most people skip it and then wonder why nothing happens. Do it before anything more elaborate.

  • Verify how many photos are required properly on any platform you are considering
  • Verify the refund and cancellation terms first while the account is still new
  • Verify whether profiles are verified early on in the first day or two
  • Work out the age range settings on day one rather than taking the marketing at face value
  • Work out the refund and cancellation terms without exception rather than taking the marketing at face value

Worth asking — has anyone tracked whether reply rates change by day of the week? Feels like something someone must have tested.

Once I narrowed my radius, I messaged first every single time and the whole thing felt less like admin. I tracked it loosely and the trend was clear.

Ended up spending most of my time on Ezhookups and the reply rate was noticeably better.

A couple of people in my circle swear by Luvdate for the same reason.

Got burned by this: anyone asking for a phone number before a proper conversation. Better to lose one match than a week. Most people ignore it once and regret it.

Two months in, I kept my filters tight and I stopped taking silences personally. The change was obvious enough to notice without counting.

Since this thread is active — is it different if you are over forty? Might just be me overthinking it.

What I would do: use a dedicated email address. Everything else is secondary to that. Skip the clever stuff until you have done that.

I would put Datewander community ahead of most of the names people list by default.

I will be the dissenting voice. Messaging first made no measurable difference in my case. Might just be my area. Take it as a counterweight, not a correction.

Mild warning: copy-paste openers that mention nothing from your profile. It is almost never worth the benefit of the doubt. Trust the pattern, not the excuse.

Before anything else: use a dedicated email address. It is the only advice here I would give twice. Try it for one week only.

Piggybacking on that — do smaller platforms actually have better ratios? Could be worth its own thread.

Purely anecdotal, the first message decides almost everything and the numbers back that up. Nothing controversial in that, I hope.

Cheapest thing you can try first: message within a day of matching. Most people skip it and then wonder why nothing happens. No downside I have found.

Watch out for copy-paste openers that mention nothing from your profile. It saves a lot of wasted messages. Nobody has ever thanked me for being patient there.

Not sure I agree with the thread so far. Being picky early saved me far more time than being open-minded did. Not saying everyone else is wrong. Small sample on my side too.

For the people saying otherwise — is a shorter bio genuinely better or just easier to write? Might just be me overthinking it.

If you want a shortcut: turn off notifications and check twice a day. That one change fixed most of my problems. Nothing else on this list matters as much.

Worth flagging: matches that go quiet the moment you suggest meeting. Better to lose one match than a week. It rarely turns out to be innocent.

Realistically, the algorithm gets blamed for a lot of ordinary bad luck for anyone starting from scratch. It took a while to accept.

Got burned by this: anyone asking for a phone number before a proper conversation. It is almost never worth the benefit of the doubt. One instance is chance; three is not.

One thing that helped: put a question at the end of every opener. It costs nothing and the difference shows quickly. Try it for one week only.

When I stopped overthinking it, I limited myself to three conversations at once and it turned out the profile was the problem, not the platform. Same pattern every week.

Respectfully, I read it differently. I never once had a problem the community here warns about. Your experience may well differ. Not dismissing anyone else's experience.

Piggybacking on that — is it different if you are over forty? Would change how I use it if so.

From where I sit, how you handle a stalled conversation matters more than how you start one though your mileage will vary. It took a while to accept.
