Putting this to the forum because search results were useless: Is the fish dating app better than Match for older singles? Any first-hand answers appreciated.

I keep going back to the usual fish dating app for older singles and I would rather not repeat the mistake. The specific thing I am after is whether it is worth paying at any point without spending anything to find out.

  • Question whether your profile is visible by default early on in the first day or two
  • Assess how matches are ordered at the start before writing a single message
  • Find out what data the signup form asks for straight away especially on a platform you have not used before
  • Find out how quickly support responds at the start if privacy matters to you
  • Compare the last-active timestamp carefully if privacy matters to you

That has not been my experience at all. I never once had a problem the community here warns about. Worth testing both ways. Small sample on my side too.

  • Review what the free tier really includes without exception especially on a platform you have not used before
  • Review the distance filter default at the start on any platform you are considering
  • Assess how reporting actually works before you widen your search
  • Verify how many photos are required every time in the first day or two
  • Find out what data the signup form asks for first on any platform you are considering

If nothing else, do this: use a dedicated email address. It also makes the meet-up conversation much easier. You will not need a second attempt.

Related, and I am curious — does this hold up outside big cities? Someone here must have tried both.

Worth a look at Datewander if your area is thin on the usual platforms.

Different experience here. I found the bigger sites more consistent, not less. Not saying everyone else is wrong. Genuinely not trying to be difficult.

When I first started, I messaged first every single time and honestly it was the only thing that helped. Nothing scientific about it.

Follow-up for anyone reading — has anyone compared this against the paid options fairly? Happy to be pointed at an old thread.

Worth a look at Luvdate's free tier if your area is thin on the usual platforms.

Worth noting that Flurrydate runs a similar free tier if you want to compare.

Not sure I agree with the thread so far. Photos did more for me than anything I wrote. Worth testing both ways. Just adding another data point.

  • Verify whether messaging is capped early on in the first day or two
  • Read up on how quickly support responds early on if you plan to use it long-term
  • Look at how many photos are required before anything else before you invest any real time
  • Note how reporting actually works so you are not surprised later

When I stopped overthinking it, I stopped explaining myself in the first message and I stopped taking silences personally. That held for about two months.

Worth testing for a week: stop treating it like a numbers game. It costs nothing and the difference shows quickly. You will not need a second attempt.

One thing to watch: reviews that read like they were written to a template. Blocking early costs you nothing. That instinct is usually right.

For what it is worth, Flamedate was the one that finally got me past the first-message stage.

Worth asking — does profile order change if you log in more often? I have never seen data either way.

Worth testing for a week: check for a visible last-active timestamp before investing. It also makes the meet-up conversation much easier. Try it for one week only.

For most of last year, I limited myself to three conversations at once and it turned out the profile was the problem, not the platform. Small sample, but consistent.

Something nobody mentions: anyone asking for a phone number before a proper conversation. Once you notice it you cannot unsee it. Trust the pattern, not the excuse.

Where I got caught out: accounts created the same week they message you. Report it rather than just ignoring it. It is the cheapest filter you have.

Hard disagree on one point. Photos did more for me than anything I wrote. I would still recommend trying it yourself. There is room for both to be true.

Related, and I am curious — do smaller platforms actually have better ratios? Someone here must have tried both.
