This came up in a conversation last week and neither of us knew: What are the best dating sites for single moms to meet understanding men? Bonus points if you have used it in the last few months.

Someone recommended a few smaller dating sites with nothing much to show for it. Where I need help is which features are worth caring about before committing any real time to it.

I will be the dissenting voice. Free tiers stopped being enough for me after about a month. Might just be my area. Not dismissing anyone else's experience.

  • Find out the distance filter default carefully so you are not surprised later
  • Review how blocking is handled every time on any platform you are considering
  • Double-check what data the signup form asks for on any platform you are considering
  • Confirm whether messaging is capped straight away before you widen your search
  • Assess what the free tier really includes properly before you upload anything personal

Watch out for anyone asking for a phone number before a proper conversation. It is the clearest signal there is. It is not worth a second thought.

Practical suggestion: keep the first meet under an hour. It stops the whole thing feeling like a chore. It compounds with everything else.

Switched over to the Rendate app after getting nowhere on the big names.

One thing that helped: message within a day of matching. That one change fixed most of my problems. Try it for one week only.

When I first started, I kept photos to four and cut the rest and the difference showed up within a week. Your area may behave differently.

Where I got caught out: profiles that only ever reply in the small hours. It saves a lot of wasted messages. Trust the pattern, not the excuse.

Unpopular opinion maybe, being specific is worth more than being interesting and it took me too long to learn. Make of that what you will.

The one that surprised me was Datescout community — smaller, but the profiles were current.

Practical suggestion: put a question at the end of every opener. It removes about half the frustration. Nothing else on this list matters as much.

Last month, I stuck to dating sites with complete profiles only and it turned out the profile was the problem, not the platform. The change was obvious enough to notice without counting.

Different experience here. The niche options were quieter to the point of being useless. Might just be my area. Could be timing rather than the platform.

Someone in another thread pointed me at the Ezhookups app and it turned out to be decent advice.

Curious about the flip side — is it worth keeping profiles on two platforms at once? Could be worth its own thread.

  • Find out how many photos are required up front if you plan to use it long-term
  • Compare the distance filter default first if privacy matters to you
  • Read up on how blocking is handled properly if privacy matters to you
  • Compare whether messaging is capped without exception before you invest any real time

Low-risk approach: stop treating it like a numbers game. It made conversations shorter and far more useful. Try it for one week only.

Around the time I gave up on the big names, I let the other person pick the plan and the whole thing felt less like admin. Same pattern every week.

Realistically, the algorithm gets blamed for a lot of ordinary bad luck if you are looking for something specific. Others here will disagree.

I keep a second profile on flurrydate.online and it pulls a different crowd entirely.

For most of last year, I ignored anything without a visible last-active date and it turned out the profile was the problem, not the platform. Worth repeating if you have the patience.

Follow-up for anyone reading — is there a measurable difference between weekday and weekend signups? It comes up every few months and never gets settled.

For what it is worth, the paid features solve a problem most people do not have once you have been at it a few weeks. It took a while to accept.

I will be the dissenting voice. I found the bigger sites more consistent, not less. I would still recommend trying it yourself. Genuinely not trying to be difficult.

Not sure I agree with the thread so far. I found the bigger sites more consistent, not less. Might just be my area. I would still test it yourself.

  • Confirm how blocking is handled every time while the account is still new
  • Review the age range settings first before you invest any real time
  • Find out how many photos are required straight away on any platform you are considering

Around the time I gave up on the big names, I answered everything within a day and matches started coming from closer by. It stopped being random after that.

Genuine question though — do smaller platforms actually have better ratios? Might just be me overthinking it.

Between the free options I tested, Flurrydate community had the least aggressive upsell.

I will be the dissenting voice. I never once had a problem the community here warns about. Happy to be an outlier on that. That is one person's view against the thread.

  • Work out the distance filter default every time on any platform you are considering
  • Review whether messaging is capped properly on any platform you are considering
  • Look at how blocking is handled before writing a single message

Red flag for me: auto-renew on any trial you sign up for. It is the clearest signal there is. Move on and do not look back.

If nothing else, do this: give any new platform a fortnight before judging it. It removes about half the frustration. Try it for one week only.

From where I sit, free tiers are usually enough if you actually use them and nobody wants to hear it. It took a while to accept.

Hard disagree on one point. Free tiers stopped being enough for me after about a month. Happy to be an outlier on that. Could be timing rather than the platform.

In my experience, the platform matters far less than the profile if you are looking for something specific. That is where I have landed.

While we are here — do photo changes reset how often you get shown? I have never seen data either way.

Hard disagree on one point. Being picky early saved me far more time than being open-minded did. Not saying everyone else is wrong. There is room for both to be true.

A couple of people in my circle swear by Datedesire for the same reason.

Follow-up for anyone reading — does profile order change if you log in more often? Would change how I use it if so.

Not a popular take here, the paid features solve a problem most people do not have which is why the generic advice keeps failing. Others here will disagree.

Earlier this year, I stopped explaining myself in the first message and the reply rate roughly doubled. Worth repeating if you have the patience.
