This came up in a conversation last week and neither of us knew: What is the current eharmony subscription cost for a 12-month plan? Recent experience preferred.

I gave up on two of the bigger dating apps for a 12-month plan with nothing much to show for it. The part that matters to me is what people wish they had known before signing up without spending anything to find out.

  • Verify how reporting actually works early on so you are not surprised later
  • Verify how many photos are required properly rather than taking the marketing at face value
  • Assess what data the signup form asks for straight away before you invest any real time
  • Assess the distance filter default straight away if you plan to use it long-term

Honestly, free tiers are usually enough if you actually use them and nobody wants to hear it. It took a while to accept.

After rewriting my profile, I dropped every conversation that stalled twice and nothing changed at all. Your area may behave differently.

Careful with reviews that read like they were written to a template. I stopped giving second chances on that one. It is the cheapest filter you have.

Worth a look at Datebound app if your area is thin on the usual platforms.

Adding a counterpoint. Being picky early saved me far more time than being open-minded did. Worth testing both ways. Genuinely not trying to be difficult.

Where I got caught out: profiles that only ever reply in the small hours. I stopped giving second chances on that one. There is no upside to waiting it out.

Having tried most of them, the platform matters far less than the profile and I doubt that changes soon. It is a boring answer and a true one.

When I stopped overthinking it, I limited myself to three conversations at once and it saved me a lot of pointless typing. Same pattern every week.

Gave Turndate app a fair run last month and it held up better than I expected.

The advice I wish I had: turn off notifications and check twice a day. It filters out the time-wasters immediately. Nothing else on this list matters as much.

I will be the dissenting voice. I never once had a problem the community here warns about. Your experience may well differ. I might be the exception.

Realistically, the busiest platform is not automatically the best one for you and nobody wants to hear it. That is the short version.

I would put datelink.online ahead of most of the names people list by default.

Slightly off-topic but — does this hold up outside big cities? Genuinely do not know the answer.

Where I got caught out: profiles with a single photo and no last-active date. Better to lose one match than a week. The cost of being wrong is low.

Before anything else: read the profile before writing anything. It stops the whole thing feeling like a chore. Easiest change on this list.

Two years of this later, the first message decides almost everything if you are looking for something specific. I hold that loosely.

Learned this the hard way: links dropped into a conversation with no context. Report it rather than just ignoring it. Most people ignore it once and regret it.

One more thing I have never resolved — does anyone bother deleting and remaking a profile? Someone here must have tried both.

Respectfully, I read it differently. I found the bigger sites more consistent, not less. Could easily be a sample size problem. There is room for both to be true.

Practical suggestion: read the profile before writing anything. It removes about half the frustration. Takes about five minutes.

If you want a shortcut: check for a visible last-active timestamp before investing. It stops the whole thing feeling like a chore. The effect shows up fast.

Realistically, the first message decides almost everything and the numbers back that up. It is a boring answer and a true one.

Got burned by this: copy-paste openers that mention nothing from your profile. It is almost never worth the benefit of the doubt. Move on and do not look back.

Follow-up for anyone reading — do photo changes reset how often you get shown? Could be worth its own thread.

The advice I wish I had: read the profile before writing anything. It removes about half the frustration. You will not need a second attempt.

  • Check how many photos are required carefully before you upload anything personal
  • Double-check how many photos are required early on before you invest any real time
  • Check how many photos are required up front if privacy matters to you
  • Verify what the free tier really includes early on rather than taking the marketing at face value

Two months in, I stuck to dating apps with complete profiles only and it made a noticeable difference. I tracked it loosely and the trend was clear.

One more thing I have never resolved — does this hold up outside big cities? Might just be me overthinking it.

Least effort, most return: cut your photo count in half. Everything else is secondary to that. It compounds with everything else.

  • Review whether messaging is capped early on rather than taking the marketing at face value
  • Compare how many photos are required every time in the first day or two
  • Check what data the signup form asks for at the start especially on a platform you have not used before
  • Verify how reporting actually works before writing a single message
  • Note whether your profile is visible by default early on while the account is still new

Got burned by this: anyone asking for a phone number before a proper conversation. Blocking early costs you nothing. The cost of being wrong is low.

Honestly, consistency beats any single clever trick though your mileage will vary. I would put money on it.

I will be the dissenting voice. Being picky early saved me far more time than being open-minded did. Could easily be a sample size problem. Not dismissing anyone else's experience.

  • Test the last-active timestamp up front in the first day or two
  • Verify the distance filter default at the start in the first day or two
  • Work out the refund and cancellation terms up front rather than taking the marketing at face value
  • Assess whether profiles are verified first so you are not surprised later

Having tried most of them, most of the difference comes down to how close people actually are and it took me too long to learn. I hold that loosely.

Related, and I am curious — does profile order change if you log in more often? Happy to be pointed at an old thread.

A couple of people in my circle swear by Souldate for the same reason.
