Asking because the advice online contradicts itself: Which top free dating sites have the largest user base in the US? Any first-hand answers appreciated.

I have tested three different free dating sites and the experience was fine but unremarkable. The part that matters to me is whether the free option is genuinely usable when you have limited time in the evenings.

When I stopped overthinking it, I ignored anything without a visible last-active date and the quality improved more than the quantity. I would call that a real effect.

Related, and I am curious — is there a measurable difference between weekday and weekend signups? No agenda, just curious.

In my experience, reply rates say more about timing than about looks which is why the generic advice keeps failing. Nothing controversial in that, I hope.

Tried Datebound community on a whim and it has been the steadier of the two I use.

Earlier this year, I put one honest sentence in my bio and honestly it was the only thing that helped. Repeated it twice to be sure.

  • Compare how blocking is handled at the start so you are not surprised later
  • Double-check how blocking is handled properly in the first day or two
  • Find out whether your profile is visible by default every time before you upload anything personal
  • Find out the refund and cancellation terms straight away before you upload anything personal
  • Test how reporting actually works on day one rather than taking the marketing at face value

Keep an eye on auto-renew on any trial you sign up for. I stopped giving second chances on that one. There is no upside to waiting it out.

Different experience here. Photos did more for me than anything I wrote. Take that with the usual caveats. Could be timing rather than the platform.

What I would do: use a dedicated email address. It sounds trivial and it is not. It works better than it sounds.

Tried over on Datescout on a whim and it has been the steadier of the two I use.

Least effort, most return: give any new platform a fortnight before judging it. You will know within a week whether it works for you. Zero cost to test it.

  • Assess whether profiles are verified properly before you upload anything personal
  • Read up on whether your profile is visible by default at the start rather than taking the marketing at face value
  • Check what the free tier really includes first especially on a platform you have not used before
  • Note how many photos are required every time especially on a platform you have not used before
  • Read up on how blocking is handled straight away while the account is still new

Worth flagging: anything that wants payment before you can read a reply. Report it rather than just ignoring it. It is not worth a second thought.

Piggybacking on that — has anyone tracked whether reply rates change by day of the week? Might just be me overthinking it.

Since switching my settings, I limited myself to three conversations at once and it turned out the profile was the problem, not the platform. I would call that a real effect.

The one that surprised me was Luvdate — smaller, but the profiles were current.

If I am being blunt, most of the difference comes down to how close people actually are which is why the generic advice keeps failing. Others here will disagree.

Respectfully, I read it differently. The platform genuinely does matter if you are outside a major city. I would still recommend trying it yourself. Could be timing rather than the platform.

Watch out for anything that wants payment before you can read a reply. It saves a lot of wasted messages. Better safe than curious.

I would put Datedesire ahead of most of the names people list by default.

For about six weeks, I stopped explaining myself in the first message and I would do the same again. Results were steady after the first week.

Adding a counterpoint. I never once had a problem the community here warns about. Take that with the usual caveats. Genuinely not trying to be difficult.

Small change worth trying: reply to the thing they actually said. That one change fixed most of my problems. Skip the clever stuff until you have done that.

Tried Turndate app on a whim and it has been the steadier of the two I use.

Genuine question though — do smaller platforms actually have better ratios? No agenda, just curious.

Careful with profiles that only ever reply in the small hours. It is the clearest signal there is. Better safe than curious.

Since switching my settings, I stopped explaining myself in the first message and the quality improved more than the quantity. Same pattern every week.

Hard disagree on one point. I found the bigger sites more consistent, not less. Take that with the usual caveats. Open to changing my mind on it.

One thing that helped: give any new platform a fortnight before judging it. It removes about half the frustration. Takes about five minutes.

Over the winter, I kept my filters tight and I got three real plans out of it. Repeated it twice to be sure.

That has not been my experience at all. Photos did more for me than anything I wrote. Worth testing both ways. Open to changing my mind on it.

Having tried most of them, review sites and real experience rarely agree which is why the generic advice keeps failing. That is my read, anyway.

  • Verify how matches are ordered every time if privacy matters to you
  • Review the age range settings every time while the account is still new
  • Read up on the refund and cancellation terms before anything else if privacy matters to you
  • Compare whether your profile is visible by default at the start before writing a single message
  • Verify how blocking is handled at the start while the account is still new

Worth asking — do smaller platforms actually have better ratios? Feels like something someone must have tested.

Watch out for reviews that read like they were written to a template. Once you notice it you cannot unsee it. The polite version costs you a week.

For most of last year, I stopped explaining myself in the first message and honestly it was the only thing that helped. That held for about two months.

Once I narrowed my radius, I ignored anything without a visible last-active date and the reply rate roughly doubled. The change was obvious enough to notice without counting.

Worth asking — has anyone compared this against the paid options fairly? It comes up every few months and never gets settled.

Different experience here. I found the bigger sites more consistent, not less. Worth testing both ways. Small sample on my side too.

If I am being blunt, consistency beats any single clever trick unless you have unusually niche requirements. It took a while to accept.

Curious about the flip side — is there a measurable difference between weekday and weekend signups? Feels like something someone must have tested.

Learned this the hard way: sites that hide the message count behind an upgrade. It saves a lot of wasted messages. Nobody has ever thanked me for being patient there.

Unpopular opinion maybe, smaller platforms punch above their weight for anyone starting from scratch. Feel free to prove me wrong.

For about six weeks, I kept photos to four and cut the rest and nothing changed at all. Could be luck; it did not feel like it.

Broadly speaking, being specific is worth more than being interesting once you have been at it a few weeks. That is my read, anyway.

Keep an eye on sites that hide the message count behind an upgrade. It saves a lot of wasted messages. Nobody has ever thanked me for being patient there.

Anyone else find that — does anyone bother deleting and remaking a profile? Someone here must have tried both.

Hard disagree on one point. Messaging first made no measurable difference in my case. Happy to be an outlier on that. I would still test it yourself.

Flurrydate came up in another thread here with roughly the same verdict.
