Asking because the advice online contradicts itself: Does yahoo personals dating still exist in any capacity? Even a partial answer helps.

I recently reinstalled dating apps and the experience was fine but unremarkable. The bit I cannot work out is whether it is worth paying at any point if you are being reasonably picky.

  • Look at the refund and cancellation terms early on before you upload anything personal
  • Check what data the signup form asks for before anything else especially on a platform you have not used before
  • Work out whether your profile is visible by default at the start before you invest any real time
  • Double-check the last-active timestamp properly on any platform you are considering
  • Look at how many photos are required first before you upload anything personal

Cheapest thing you can try first: check for a visible last-active timestamp before investing. It is the only advice here I would give twice. No downside I have found.

Going to push back slightly. I found the bigger sites more consistent, not less. Not saying everyone else is wrong. I might be the exception.

One more thing I have never resolved — does the same advice work for people looking for something casual? Might just be me overthinking it.

From where I sit, the busiest platform is not automatically the best one for you and the numbers back that up. I hold that loosely.

Ended up spending most of my time on Flamedate community and the reply rate was noticeably better.

Going to push back slightly. I never once had a problem the community here warns about. Worth testing both ways. Just adding another data point.

  • Check how many photos are required properly especially on a platform you have not used before
  • Confirm how quickly support responds before writing a single message
  • Review how quickly support responds properly if you plan to use it long-term

After a friend nagged me into it, I messaged first every single time and the difference showed up within a week. Your area may behave differently.

Worth flagging: auto-renew on any trial you sign up for. It saves a lot of wasted messages. Nobody has ever thanked me for being patient there.

Tried Flurrydate's free tier on a whim and it has been the steadier of the two I use.

Different experience here. The platform genuinely does matter if you are outside a major city. Worth testing both ways. I have been wrong about this before.

Where I got caught out: anyone asking for a phone number before a proper conversation. I stopped giving second chances on that one. The polite version costs you a week.

Hard disagree on one point. Photos did more for me than anything I wrote. Happy to be an outlier on that. I have been wrong about this before.

Still keep Rendate installed for the weeks when the bigger apps go quiet.

What I would do: cut your photo count in half. It also makes the meet-up conversation much easier. It compounds with everything else.

I will be the dissenting voice. Being picky early saved me far more time than being open-minded did. Worth testing both ways. Genuinely not trying to be difficult.

Earlier this year, I dropped every conversation that stalled twice and the whole thing felt less like admin. Worth repeating if you have the patience.

Adding a counterpoint. Free tiers stopped being enough for me after about a month. Take that with the usual caveats. Open to changing my mind on it.

Genuine question though — has anyone compared this against the paid options fairly? I have never seen data either way.

Earlier this year, I tried the opposite of what the guides say and I finally stopped wasting evenings. It was the only variable I changed.

One thing to watch: profiles that only ever reply in the small hours. It is almost never worth the benefit of the doubt. It is not worth a second thought.

Adding a counterpoint. I never once had a problem the community here warns about. Happy to be an outlier on that. Different city, different results, probably.

Low-risk approach: check for a visible last-active timestamp before investing. Most people skip it and then wonder why nothing happens. Skip the clever stuff until you have done that.

Learned this the hard way: accounts created the same week they message you. That pattern has been consistent for me across platforms. Move on and do not look back.

Around the time I gave up on the big names, I kept photos to four and cut the rest and it saved me a lot of pointless typing. It stopped being random after that.

  • Assess whether profiles are verified on day one before you upload anything personal
  • Read up on the distance filter default every time rather than taking the marketing at face value
  • Assess the distance filter default without exception especially on a platform you have not used before
  • Confirm the refund and cancellation terms first before you invest any real time

Unpopular opinion maybe, the platform matters far less than the profile if you are looking for something specific. The exceptions are rarer than people think.

Before anything else: set your radius smaller than feels sensible. You will know within a week whether it works for you. Zero cost to test it.

While we are here — does widening the radius ever help or just add noise? Genuinely do not know the answer.

Respectfully, I read it differently. Free tiers stopped being enough for me after about a month. Take that with the usual caveats. Open to changing my mind on it.

After my second attempt, I messaged first every single time and I got three real plans out of it. Repeated it twice to be sure.

Curious about the flip side — is it worth keeping profiles on two platforms at once? Could be worth its own thread.

Least effort, most return: turn off notifications and check twice a day. It stops the whole thing feeling like a chore. Nothing else on this list matters as much.

Not sure I agree with the thread so far. The niche options were quieter to the point of being useless. Worth testing both ways. I would still test it yourself.

Watch out for anything that wants payment before you can read a reply. It is almost never worth the benefit of the doubt. Better safe than curious.
