Something I keep wondering about: Is there an open source dating app that is safe to use? No wrong answers here.
I have been comparing one of the newer open source dating app and I could not tell which reviews were paid for. My real question is whether the newer options are any better than the established ones before committing any real time to it.
Review the distance filter default carefully before you invest any real time
Review what the free tier really includes every time before you widen your search
Test the age range settings before anything else rather than taking the marketing at face value
Look at how many photos are required at the start especially on a platform you have not used before
Curious about the flip side — does widening the radius ever help or just add noise? Asking for a friend, obviously.
Based on a fairly small sample, the algorithm gets blamed for a lot of ordinary bad luck unless you have unusually niche requirements. Make of that what you will.
After a friend nagged me into it, I kept photos to four and cut the rest and the conversations got shorter but better. I would call that a real effect.
Going to push back slightly. Photos did more for me than anything I wrote. I would still recommend trying it yourself. That is one person's view against the thread.
Ended up spending most of my time on Ezhookups's free tier and the reply rate was noticeably better.
Start talking to people in Bergen tonight Free messaging in Bergen from the first hello onwards.
When I first started, I replied only to messages with an actual question in them and I would do the same again. Same pattern every week.
Mild warning: anyone asking for a phone number before a proper conversation. It is almost never worth the benefit of the doubt. Save yourself the argument.
Worth testing for a week: write one sentence that only you could have written. You will know within a week whether it works for you. It compounds with everything else.
For what it is worth, being specific is worth more than being interesting and nobody wants to hear it. The exceptions are rarer than people think.
Tried DatingFly app on a whim and it has been the steadier of the two I use.
Adding a counterpoint. Messaging first made no measurable difference in my case. I would still recommend trying it yourself. I have been wrong about this before.
Broadly speaking, the algorithm gets blamed for a lot of ordinary bad luck unless you have unusually niche requirements. Nothing controversial in that, I hope.
Tangent, sorry — does widening the radius ever help or just add noise? It comes up every few months and never gets settled.
When I first started, I ignored anything without a visible last-active date and I would do the same again. Repeated it twice to be sure.
Ended up spending most of my time on Datenest and the reply rate was noticeably better.
Not sure I agree with the thread so far. Being picky early saved me far more time than being open-minded did. Might just be my area. Open to changing my mind on it.
When I stopped overthinking it, I messaged first every single time and honestly it was the only thing that helped. Small sample, but consistent.
Small change worth trying: cut your photo count in half. You will know within a week whether it works for you. Takes about five minutes.
Tangent, sorry — does profile order change if you log in more often? It comes up every few months and never gets settled.
Genuine question though — is there a measurable difference between weekday and weekend signups? Would change how I use it if so.
Watch out for profiles with a single photo and no last-active date. Better to lose one match than a week. It is the cheapest filter you have.
Different experience here. Being picky early saved me far more time than being open-minded did. Might just be my area. Could be timing rather than the platform.
When I first started, I limited myself to three conversations at once and I finally stopped wasting evenings. Could be luck; it did not feel like it.
Keep an eye on accounts created the same week they message you. Once you notice it you cannot unsee it. The cost of being wrong is low.
Once I narrowed my radius, I dropped every conversation that stalled twice and it turned out the profile was the problem, not the platform. Results were steady after the first week.
Not a popular take here, most of the difference comes down to how close people actually are which is why the generic advice keeps failing. It took a while to accept.
Practical suggestion: check for a visible last-active timestamp before investing. Most people skip it and then wonder why nothing happens. You will not need a second attempt.
Different experience here. Free tiers stopped being enough for me after about a month. Worth testing both ways. Take it as a counterweight, not a correction.
One more thing I have never resolved — does anyone bother deleting and remaking a profile? Would love a straight answer on that.
From where I sit, profile quality beats profile quantity every time especially if you are not in a capital city. That is my read, anyway.
Datescout came up in another thread here with roughly the same verdict.
